Hi all - hoping you have been good!

I generally adhere to a healthy diet - especially low on animal saturated fats etc. My dinner is the focus here and I would like to change an element. Dinner is usually boiled vegetables and boiled potatoes too with oven baked fish as the protein. However as a side alongside dinner - I got hooked on a half a bag (100 grams) of potato chips (regular or sour cream and onion etc.). I want to kick the potato chips to the curb and need your help to help me to find some healthier options to replace the potato chips. Some have suggested pop corn and others oven baked chips. Ideally I want something that won't bulk me up. I am thinking some quinoa or cous cous? I don't want any peanuts or other nuts. Maybe chestnuts though? Ideally something that is non-perishable so no salads. I can buy frozen items or in a can or bag/packet. Help please to give a large list of options. I thought I would ask you great people instead of AI. Low sodium and non-sweet would be ideal because it would be a side dish.

Please give options that are light years healthier than potato chips. Looking back, the fat and salt created the potato chips addiction as a mandatory side but the most important thing is realization I suppose and making the healthy change.

Thank you!

Air-popped popcorn could be a good option. It still gives that crunchy feeling but has much less fat than potato chips. Roasted chickpeas are another nice snack. They turn crunchy in the oven and are quite filling. You could also try edamame from the freezer or a small side of quinoa with herbs. These are much lighter than chips but still satisfying.

Potato skins can be a very nice snack and you can fry it or bake it. Same for carrot, courgette and pumpkin skins. Just seasoning with olive oil and fresh/dried herbs/spices

Question is which element of the particular potato chips you've been eating are considered unhealthy? The potatoes? The specific type of oil used? The flavouring powders etc? The salt? The overall calories? And curious as to why they're a meal side to begin with and why to be replaced? Could lose them and eat more of the other dishes? (Is the half bag you're eating 100g - a lot - or are you eating half of a 100g bag? 🙂)

Oils and fats aren't in and of themselves unhealthy - on the contrary they're a necessary food group and like everything else it's about how much and what type. Outside of chronic or acute health considerations, demonising all fats and oil across the board is a big mistake IMO. Ditto salt. Ditto carbs. Just need to be factored into the overall picture.

Back to potato chips/crisps - they're all about the crunch 🙂 and for a good chip we like olive oil or avocado oil fried potato chips for that sort of thing. Potatoes, oil, salt and nothing else. 1 oz/28g at 160 cals, so pretty calorie dense to be sure but not fundamentally unheathy.

Would I add 100g of potato chips/crisps to every single main meal? Probably not. For 560 cals or thereabouts of which about 300 (or half for 50g) are fat I might be looking at completely different food and main dish options, just more fruit n veg.

In which case, the question is not about chips - it's about eating habits, cooking and variety 😅
