Plans for today (2025)

Plans for today: a bit more prep to do because I'm doing an Indian meal for 10 people this evening.
Vadas and pakoras, with tamarind chutney, Butter chicken, potatoes & tomatoes with coconut, aubergine masala, basmati rice, naan, raita and lassi. Plus some incendiary hot pickles!
 
I have been talking to my friend about (with our DHs) getting together to go see a concert sometime within the next few months. I heard that Dave Matthews band (DH and I have seen twice before) this summer at a big outdoor music venue. There is covered pavilliion seating near the stage. I just went online to look at tickets. Last time we went (about 9 years ago) we bought pavillion tickets for $65 per ticket not including taxes and handling fees. The lawn tickets back then were $20 each. Now they have gone up to $235 per ticket for pavillion and $85 for lawn tickets. To heck with that! It's a great show but not that great. DH suggested we could buy steaks, lobsters, and champagne and put a DM CD on while we eat and we would still have money leftover, LOL!

So now I am looking for smaller venues with appealing entertainment. Mostly all I can find are tribute bands, comedy shows, and the like. I do enjoy comedy sometimes, but most of the shows are midweek and our friends are generally only available Saturday evenings. I guess I will keep looking.

Making seafood chowder for dinner. Guess I will go boil some lobster and shrimp shells to make stock.

Yes! It will have shrimp, fish (mahi mahi which I know you love), and crabmeat in it, along with potatoes, carrot, celery, onion, red bell pepper, and asparagus with a touch of cream and finished with fresh parley. I have made it many, many times and it's always yummy!

Not in my chowder, but I like crab stick in homemade California rolls! I used to eat those out of the package when I was younger with some garlic and lemon-butter. They also make a great topping for protein-veggie power bowls (shredded red cabbage, kale, avocado, edamame peas, sprouts, etc.). My kids liked them as well. That's a healthy and inexpensive seafood protein alternative for sure. But I quit buying them for some reason (except special occasions like makng homemade sushi) after the kids grew up and moved out (probably because my DH won't eat it and I can't eat a whole package by myself--not keen on freezing them).

When I make chowder, I usually warm the crabmeat up and place it atop the chowder in the bowl just before serving (especially if it's snow crab or king crab legs meat, which it often is). The shrimp and fish make up the body of the chowder, but those are still in small chunks since added near the end of the cooking so it doesn't turn rubbery.

Yes I am! But snow crab and king crab come from the Bering Strait. They are in the freezer section at the seafood department.

Now 30+ years ago I probably couldn't have gotten any good seafood living in Ohio. I was living in Florida up until 2000. I remember when I moved here mostly it was fresh salmon, frozen snow crab (smaller legs), and shrimp (smaller shrimp and most often frozen) were the only good seafood I could find at the grocery store. Now I can get all kinds of fresh or flash frozen fish and other seafood up here, some shipped directly to my door. I am pretty frugal so I shop sales and make out pretty good, actually it's often less expensive than when I buy it fresh at seafood shops while we are on vacation at the beach.

They were looked down on when I was growing up but they were my guilty pleasure, I used to eat a whole packet of those as a snack (in my pre coeliac days).
Unfortunately my guts have taken against them which is annoying, even the wheat free ones.
The works canteen sometimes did a fantastic shredded ‘crab’ stick salad with them, always a good day when I saw that salad was on! Miss that!

I used to use basmati but an Indian guy told me jasmine is the best.I've been using it since. What's your opinion???

Jasmine rice is divine. I stick to Basmati because I've got a contact in the Indian embassy and she provides me with the most amazing stuff. Jasmine is more "perfumed", perhaps. Either will do.
