Getting ready to run out to pick up some semolina flour. I looked on Walmart's website and they had it available to order for delivery either tomorrow or Saturday, but I want to get it tonight so I can make fresh pasta for another one of those turkey noodle casseroles we liked so much. I'll make a big batch of the dough again and I can cut and freeze some fettucine and spaghetti tomorrow night.
So I called a place called Marc's, which is an Ohio discount store that has groceries and other merchandise--because at the other local grocery stores here semolina is pretty expensive and if Marc's has it, it will be probably 1/3 of their prices. I told the young man who answered the phone that I was looking for a specialty flour called semolina that is used to make fresh homemade pasta and was wondering if someone could go check to see if they carry it. He asked me again what it was, and I spelled it out for him. Well I guess the "pasta" word didn't register with him...I was only hold for a couple of minutes and he came back and said, "Well I looked out in the nursery area and I also asked our manager, and we don't carry that plant." I didn't laugh out loud, but I was chuckling inside as I gently said, "No hun, it's not a flower. It's a type of F-L-O-U-R (spelling it out) and you will find it in the baking aisle. It might be with some other specialty flours like whole wheat, almond, rice flour...that kind of thing." He sheepishly said he would go look in the baking aisle. He came back and said that they do have it. So leaving in a few to get that and to pick up our prescriptions at the nearby pharmacies.
I told my DH and we both got a bit of a laugh out of it. I mean, I probably didn't know what semolina was when I was 18-20 years old, either. I likely didn't learn about it until I got into cooking in my late 20s and dated a couple of chefs. Still kinda funny though.
