• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

Plans for today (2026)

All week, I've been planning to go hiking in one of our state's remote wilderness areas. But it's 5° F this morning, and so probably 0° F or less in the mountains, and likely -10° F with the wind chill up on top. I like to hike a couple miles or so back in, build a fire, and cook a lunch, but those temps are too cold to keep my hands warm. Overnight and into Sunday, we're to get 12" to 18" of snow, so tomorrow is out as well, as the mountain roads will be impassable. Oh well, maybe one of these next weekends. I have plenty of things around the house to take care of. A few pics of some of last winter's adventures...

-32 C (-25 F) out this morning. Off to work for a short day. Close at 2. Winona wants to drive to the city after. I'm hoping she changes her mind by then.
I’m further south than you, so it’s only -20 here, but we’re supposed to get buried in snow tomorrow. I’ll be heading over to my parents’ place to dig them out.

In the very unlikely chance that we could lose electric with all the snow we're to get tomorrow, I brought up my generator from the shed to power the kitchen and garage refrigerators, if need be. I haven't touched it in over a year and it wouldn't start, but pulling and cleaning the spark plug did the trick. I'm letting it run dry outside to blow out the cobwebs and will top it off with fresh, ethanol-free gas.

Finally I got to cut my fig cuttings for a give away. Yesterday was figs that I want to keep.
Today I also moved a small blueberry pot to the front garden, I need to make room a Tahitian lime aka Bearss lime.
There will be a few fruit trees moving. Gold Nugget over to Bearss lime, Washington Navel over to previous Gold Nugget spot, Oro Blanco to previous Washington Navel spot.
The whole moving thing is to make room for one more fruit tree, not quite in the ground, but the way I do it, the root can expand.

Have you stocked up on her favourite treats?
Always have lots of treats but she's not eating. GI upset is common side affect of phenobarbital. She gained a pound over the week of that darn drug. She's still drinking lots of water and the ataxia is less so those are good signs, she's breaking it down. I've read it can take several days to a week to be completely eliminated. ☹️

Big plan today is to drive up north of my mom’s house to pick up a wax jambu. Maybe Sunday the traffic is not dense.
Before that I need to go to the bank and get some money, and also drive to the charity place to donate some stuff, there are 3 wine bottles in there. Last time they took, hopefully they will take it this time.
In between, cook lunch, and pork chili for my husband for dinner.
