Plans for today (2026)

After work, I popped the mower deck off to clean out the grass buildup and to sharpen the blades. The blades are on their last legs and will soon need to be replaced, but at least they're now cutting wayyy better than they were. I need to order a few other replacement parts, as well.

I drove around today to Asian markets trying to find some tobiko or masago and struck out. The Asian markets here are mostly Thai and Vietnamese. I did find some large containers of masago at the restaurant supply store, but way too much product for what I need, so tomorrow I am going to the sushi restaurant we normally patronize and ask if they will sell me some. I only need a few ramekins of it so hopefully they will oblige.
Just love that stuff. Hope you find some.

Yeah I'm making sushi style deviled eggs for the challenge! I keep wasabi, soy, cucumber, green onion, avocado, and furikake on hand already. I bought some smoked salmon yesterday. I need some kewpie mayo but Walmart has that. I think I'm gonna talk to the prepared foods manager at the big grocery store where they make sushi and see if they'll sell me a small container. I'm gonna mix the yolks with wasabi, soy and kewpie to stuff the yolks, then top with slivers of the other ingredients I think and top with a little of the fish roe. Still working it out in my head. This should be fun and interesting!

Sounds like you have pretty good Japanese and Asian outlets and supplies where you are. Other than a couple of the good sushi restaurants in our orbit, no fish egg sources until you hit the big metro areas.

In Houston I could buy a small container of fish eggs at their Asian market. I'm gonna have to talk the prepared foods manager at the regular grocery store that sells sushi here in Akron. He will (hopefully) have to scoop it, weigh it, and probably have to put some sort of generic label on it because they dont sell it other than in rolls. If that doesn't work, I will go to our favorite sushi restaurant and try my luck there. The Asian markets here have a lot of other things, but not the fish eggs. Wasabi, sushi rice, etc. are not hard to find, but the roe...

Well here's a thing FWIW. All this talk of fish eggs made me remember places I've bought it. I'm not talking silly priced stuff but just ordinary spread on your toast stuff. It's everywhere in Spain for example - you can pick up a small 100g jars of sustainably sourced fish eggs for just a few euros in any supermarket. World Market used to do 2 and 4 oz jars of Icelandic for not very much which I used to pick up along with olives and marmite and big bags of Italian roast coffee, but stopped doing it during the pandemic. Anyway, I just took a look on there and they have 2oz jars of various types for $10 which isn't cheap (what is these days tho with crazy import taxes) but not awful.
