Recipe Copyright Advice
Copyright and the law regarding individual recipes posted online is unclear. It varies from country to country.

So CookingBites makes the following recommendations:
  • Titles can be copied. It can not be copyrighted.
  • The description is subject to copyright laws, so rewrite it in your own words.
  • The ingredients list can be copied. Again, it can not be copyrighted to the best of our knowledge.
  • The method is subject to copyright laws, so must be rewritten in your own words.
  • Photographs vary, but are usually subject to copyright laws, so use your own where possible, otherwise try copyright free images and credit accordingly.

References
I'll keep the CookingBites policy simple and clear.
  • If you are using a recipe from another site, we simply ask that you are honest and say so: credit it as you would wish any recipe of your's to be credited and link to the source.
  • If your recipe has been adapted from another recipe, then again please state adaped from … and link to the source.
  • If the recipe is your's (or you believe this to be the case), again, say so. If there is any doubt, provide links to sources that you have used in creating this recipe.
Recipes on sites asking you not to copy them
A few sites make it clear that they do not want you to copy their recipes. CookingBites.com requests that you honour their wishes. If contacted by them, we will remove recipes found to be in violation of their wishes.

Recipes published in books or other media (newspapers, magazines etc), are covered by different copyright laws

They are country specific and they can be author or publisher specific as well. Read the copyright section inside that particular media to familiarise yourself with it. If in doubt, assume that the above rules apply.

CookingBites does not allow photographs of any part of a recipe from any publication.

As always, the link at the bottom of this page is the published version. If it differs from the above, please let me know and follow the official version.

Once again, I am finding myself needing to raise copyright issues.

Please remember that the site has been shutdown in the past over issues such as this and I go get contacted by copyright owners to remove content. I am the one who is held accountable for your content. But every time the site is served with a take-down notice, it is a blackmark against the site and sooner or later, that will be one too many black marks against this site and my name.

So I am asking you all to show me and your CB friends some respect and stop posting recipe and/or photograph violations.
  • Do not post screenshots or photographs of copyrighted material, such as books or websites.
  • Do not post other people's photographs as your own. If they grant permission to re-use 1 of their photographs, be considerate and reference them - I have no issues with that.
  • You can only copy the recipe title and the ingredients list. The description and the method/instructions must be your own words.
  • Finally, please acknowledge the sources of your recipes, even if you have modified them. Politeness goes a long way when it comes to addressing these issues and not even acknowledging you have taken inspiration from another site, is not helpful in addressing potential copyright violations.
Finally, we ask that you put all recipes into a new thread of their own and link back to them. CookingBites gets no benefit from recipes inside long threads. Search engines do not index long threads. They stop after a certain number of posts and CB needs new content to stay alive. That means new threads and recipes are an excellent source for that.
