Shallots

Does anyone here grow their own shallots?

If so, when do you plant them. 1 packet has Autumn or Spring in it and the other 3 Spring (only), but they were advertised as planting now, so I'm wondering if they need shelter from cold or if I should hang on to the Spring ones until closer to spring?

Confused.

I've not grown then before and I'm useless at growing onions, but have no issues with chives.

I haven't grown onions or garlic but have grown shallots planted in the spring, with good results. We're (definitely) not subtropical and have a fairly short growing season and they did well with extra watering as we're arid.

The link Barriehie posted has options with late autumn for subtropical, late winter/spring for other. Don't think you're subtropical tho.
