The General Chat Thread (2025)

Are the royals the only ones who have hunts? I don't personally kill animals other than fish, but I obviously am not a vegetarian so I have no issues with people who hunt.

But the people shooting thing, geeze, no it's awful. I still don't understand why ARs are legal here. It's stupid.
You obviously don't know of the other uses for a 5.56mm round other than the one the media portrays as being a people killer. It wrecks the crap out of the coyotes killing your goats and it's a lot cheaper than an actual big bore hunting round.

That's fair for the millions of goat herders we have in our country who live on the vast expanses of land in close proximity to coyotes.

I was replying to Barry’s quote which was about people.
I tread very lightly as I say this, it’s the gun laws, the number of mass shootings and the sheer volume of gun related murders that boggle the mind.

As you probably know hunting animals is still common place here throughout the country.
It’s tolerated by mostly because the animal is eaten, although the majority go clay pigeon shooting now, prize hunting is frowned upon.

Fox hunting however is a whole other contentious story.

Okay, I am with you on that.

I guess I really didn't know that was still commonplace there, that's why I asked. I do not condone hunting for sport, ever.

It's awful. I understand the need to control the populations but still, fox hunting is quite inhumane and I know there are better ways they could go about it.

Firearms is the proper term.
I call it gun stuff to take the wind out of it. It’s a topic that can get people aerated.

Using the word gun around police will get you shot.
This is just the sort of statement that makes the mind boggle 😂

Firearms is the proper term. Using the word gun around police will get you shot. So, no firearms in the UK right?
Of course there are, but you have to have a gun licence, have your houses secure storage area checked by the police who will question you to try and ascertain your mental stability and suitability for a gun licence. They don’t always get it right mind you.
But it’s certainly not a simple procedure to buy a gun.

The UK has a population of over 69 million and (according to google) there are 156,000 firearms licences (and 1.4million shotgun licences) so only a minuscule proportion of the population have access to a dangerous weapon.

Apart from a kitchen knife, there are one or two of those 😂

I’m not a fan of killing anything.
But I eat meat so there’s that.

Fox hunting was banned 20 years ago in England and Wales. Scotland carried using on loopholes till 2023!

BUT instead they do a thing called ‘Trail Hunting’ which allows the dogs to follow a prelaid scent trail. A trail which is often not laid properly allowing the dogs to pick up on a real foxes scent.
Essentially it is said it’s a smokescreen for real fox hunting.

Ahh, the great gun debate. My father left us a bunch of them. We gave them all away. My brother kept a couple up at his cabin. Hunting is a huge event around here. Generations of families and crews get together yearly for the dear hunt. A friend of mine is a machine shop teacher and he suspends lessons for a week or two because nobody shows up to his classes. It is a very social event with loads of parties. Some hunt camps have live bands on the last Saturday. I've been to a few of them and they are very well attended and civilized. No guns to be seen during these hours.

Yes, around here people have those "bone collector" decals on their trucks...

I'm not really fond of game anyway. It's too...gamey tasting! I did have some venison chili once that I liked quite well, but mostly I haven't enjoyed eating venison, rabbit, and the like but was too polite to say so or turn my nose up. At least no one tried to feed me organ meats!

As far as fowl goes, I didn't like duck very much but I have heard that dove, quail, and so forth are nice tasting.

I'm good with just about any kind of meat but you already knew that from salt n pepper trotters... 😂

Dove are good but the breast is about as big as your thumb so there's that.

We had a really good Thunder/rain storm this morning and it cooled WAY down, a good 30°F.
So we opened all the doors for the fresh air and I caught a whiff of "wet animal" in the backyard.
You know that smell when a dirty, dusty animal's fur gets wet? Like that.
So I'm looking all over for what it could be... nothing.
Eventually though it did go away.
