• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

This is turning into a bad winter for coyotes. The flippin' guy across the street, about 1/2 mile, puts food out for the wild cats and the coyotes come to eat the cats. They're a threat to Pippi... Ozzie can trash one but not a pack.

I go out with Pippi at night and Ozzie tracks the flashlight, charging if he hears something. When she's done Ozzie gets a piece of bread or a hotdog, he loves bread! He knows the sound of the flashlight clicking on, really smart dog!

EXACTLY!
Just like my signature ... "Aloha is a way of living and treating each other with love and respect"
Hawaii is not a big place. The island of Oahu, where we're from is only 180 miles around with over a million people on it --- think about that for minute.
222 per square mile according to google
Netherlands: 424 per square km

Another source says 541 per square km or 1400 per square mile

Feel for you. Had our own hassles with the natural order being upended by the woman who liked to feed the foxes. Caused a lot of unnecessary death. Fortunately she moved!
Would another dog help? An Ozzi sized dog? The pack always protects their own.

It would. Bouncing around an idea for a Great Pyrenees. There are lots of them around here for the goat and sheep herds and they are stalwart defenders of their space. Casper is famous around here.

Drizzly cold day today - rain tumbling down and the windchill is 34F/2C.
Not that cold here but same same with the rain. Same system.

Wonderful story. Truly amazing the selflessness.

When I was about 17 I went out on the town and came back quite worse for wear but looked fine so my dad said Hi and offered me some whisky 😬

I remember saying I'll go to bed in a bit and sitting by the pond, then I remember periodically opening and closing my eyes and all I saw was the underside of the chest of my dog as he stood over the top of my body.
He must of been there for hours!
Loyal to a fault.

Sounds like Ozzie. If I go more than 5' from the front door he's right there either beside me or checking it out up ahead. When I go to the garden, that he's not allowed in, he'll go uphill side about 20' and sit where he can see everything, especially Pippi. 🙏

Another thunderstorm season started with a bang, and no power.... no warning, first strike of lightning and the electrics out twice, tripped whatever the switch is that is marked "test monthly" both times. Not everything came back up, however.

Now waiting on some electronics to be replaced under warranty. Luckily this week is rest week between the end of one term (last week) and the start of the next one (this Monday).

The generator (sine wave compatible) is almost ready. Should be operational tomorrow, ready for 6 days of thunderstorms. Got the oil and the fuel, but no way of getting the oil to the hole to fill it. That's tomorrow's task.

And I need to buy yet another surge protector... also tomorrow. Before long, I'll have the entire house running off surge protectors.
