The General Chat Thread (2025)

Tuesday night when we got home from the airport, the kitchen faucet wasn't working. Everything else in the house appeared operational. Well the cold water supply to the washing machine was not and the faucet on my husband's side of our double sink vanity in the master bath wasn't working, but that started shortly before we left town. But anyway, when I took a shower before work yesterday I noticed the shower pressure was low and told my husband.

We have a well and it's sweet water, thankfully, but over the years it's apparently caused some mineral build up. My DH is very good at making money but he isn't great at being handy with fixing things in general. But yesterday when I went to work he took the faucet spout off in the kitchen and scraped the gunk out, put it back on, and it works now. He also went to Home Depot and bought new shower heads and the curved pipes (we have double shower heads in the master) and installed them as well.

He also bought a new cold water supply line for the washing machine and he is supposed to put it on today, but he went on a bit of a bender last night and I suspect he might not get to it today. We shall see.

I'm thinking he's gonna have to call a plumber to fix the sink vanity faucet or install new ones on both sides. My side works fine but I'm not sure that they carry that style anymore.

That’s a lot of plumbing stuff to consider!
My mums place has a leaky radiator and a week on I’ve still not called a plumber! 😂

On the plumbing subject, my neighbor went to Taiwan and my husband noticed water running out of his front door. He texted my neighbor a picture, and now they are back. Something went wrong, the fire sprinkler inside the house was on for some reason. Now they had to call the insurance company to come and fix potential mold problem. He was going to just fix it by calling some handyman, but my husband suggested calling the insurance.

Anyway, I’m not sure about insurance companies in California, I’ve heard they drop people for claiming things, this is from several people in my art class and friends at the senior center. My husband has experience in the UK but this is USA.

You can take the parts you took off and soak them in CLR. When the new ones clog up just swap them out, or keep buying new things...

The parts won't come off the bathroom faucets. The brushed nickel finish is worn and discolored anyway. The shower heads needed replaced because they didn't match and the finish on the brushed nickel was worn on one of them, anyway. Dh cleaned out the kitchen sink one. I'm not taking off anything, nor am I buying anything. Not my pig, not my farm. These lasted nearly 30 years, anything new probably will still be on there when we sell the house in a few years. But thanks.

Maybe for future reference. My husband fixes everything in the house, he relies a lot on youtube.
Yeah, that's how my DH fixed the ice maker on the old refrigerator.
When someone else who’s not into the DIY side of doing thing steps up to do a job you have to roll with whatever way they want to handle it.
Suggestions no matter how sensible are rarely well received.
Yup, we want new parts because the old ones aren't pretty anymore and can't be restored.

Omg I'm working on a candy audit and I got stopped 4 times in 30 minutes with customers asking me where stuff is or to open locked cabinets for jewelry. I explained I'm doing quality control for a candy company and don't work there. The last lady yelled at me, lol.

That probably describes me to a T. I'm hopeless at fixing things, and I'm the first to admit it. I call the technician ( be he a plumber, carpenter, painter, electrician, etc.) and hope they know how to do their jobs. Not a clue, although I'm a whizz in the garden and in the kitchen!
