The General Chat Thread (2025)

One of our colleagues has been warned yet again about her low cut tops. She is generous and at times looks close to popping out.
Yes, we should be able to wear what we want, however this is a factory so there needs to be some decorum.

Really bright moon! It's 11:04 PM.

We're going to visit my mom on saturday and sleeping in this hotel: Leerhotel Het Klooster - Meesterlijk gastvrij . Which is an old monastery, so that seems really interesting.
And we're having dinner here: Hete Kolen - No Nonsense Bistro - Amersfoort Centrum I've been here before and it's a good place for meat & barbecue, my stepsons favorites.

We're only staying until sunday because this weekend visit is also my youngest stepsons birthday treat, he wants to visit thrift shops in a new place and he's never been to Amersfoort (where I lived most of my life) so he wanted to try that. It will also be his first night sleeping away from home in his entire life (he's autistic) and I really hope he will enjoy staying in his own hotel room! He's 23 now so I am hoping this will help him become more adventurous in the future.

Okay, so we don't drink soda pop like Coke except for as a mixer with alcohol. I like a few rum and Cokes. Coca-cola has gotten so expensive lately that when I see a sale I go stock up on it. There is a local small discount retailer in the USA called Dollar General. They had Cokes (16.9 oz liter bottles in 6 packs) on sale 3 for $12 (normally $6 a 6 pack). I also had a coupon for "$5 off if you spend $25" so I figured I would get 9 6-packs, plus I had some DG cash in my digital wallet attached to my phone number for $4.30 off. That will keep us for a few months.

I got to the register and the cashier told me the total was $37 and some change (can't remember the change amount) after applying the $9.30 discount (coupon and DG cash). I told him that couldn't be right if the 6-packs were 3 for $12, that should be $36 minus the $9.30. He said that was what the system showed and that it showed I got a discount of $18. I said, "Yeah, I got an $18 discount because they are regularly $6 each so it took off a discount of $2 per 6-pack. Since 2 x 9 = 18, I got an $18 discount, but it didn't take off the $9.30 for the coupon and the digital wallet cash." He looked at me blankly and told me that is what the system rang it up to be. I showed him the sale ad on my phone where it shows that they are on sale 3 for $12 and said, "Do the math, if I have (9) 6-packs and the 6-packs are 3 for $12, how much should it be?" He just stared at me with a confused look on his face. I asked him what 3 x 12 and he just stared at me blankly. I said, "Look, 3 x $12 = $36, then subtract $9.30. How can the amount be over $37?" He said, "Well maybe it's the tax." I told him that the sales tax in our county on average is about 6.5% (depending on township it might be 6.75%), so there is no way the tax could be that much, and I understood that there is a sugar tax as well (not sure how much that is), but if the subtotal is 36 with a 9.30 discount, the total should be $26.70 plus the sugar tax and sales tax, but no way would that those two taxes totaled could come to around $10. He just looked really confused and there was a line behind me, so I told him to void out the sale and call the manager, I would stand aside so that other customers could be assisted.

So the assistant manager came up and rang them up again. She did and said pretty much exactly the same thing. She told me that my subtotal was $54 but that the system took off $18 so I did get my discounts. I showed her the ad where it showed that they were on sale 3 for $12 and explained the same thing I had to the cashier (that 2 x 9 = 18 and that's why the system was showing the $18 discount) but that it did not take off the $9.30, and she tried to argue with me that I was wrong and that the system was right.

I was keeping my cool and being polite, but I asked them to please call another manager, and again there were a few people behind me so they voided out the purchase and I waited for her to come up to help me. I explained to her what happened and she took me to another register to ring me up, and everything rang up correctly. I thanked her for her help. I didn't say that her employees were idiots even though that's what I was thinking, but she must have sensed it because she blurted out, "Well they are new here." But does that explain how someone cannot figure out that 3 x 12 = 36? And if there is a discrepancy between what "the system" is ringing up and the sale ad, shouldn't the cashier call the manager right away instead of arguing with the customer about it and making other customers wait?

I know that it really isn't that much money in the grand scheme of things and I could have just paid it and left, but it was the principal of the matter and also those employees needed to learn a lesson. Yeah passing primary grade school math would be great for a starter! I think most people learn their multiplication tables at about age 9. Apparently these two did not retain that information.

I had to head to the liquor store for a couple of bottles of rum after that. Geeze.

My Dear Friends,
I am still here, well but tired. I thought of you this evening while making homemade applesauce to use in a carrot cake. My sister asked if I had lost my mind making applesauce instead of buying a jar. I thought of you. I knew that you would understand.
I may not participate but I do think of you often. I think how you would like a dish that I make or how you would do it better.
I miss you bunches and think of you often.
Love to all,
Elizabeth

Lovely sentiments to share with us.
You are missed too.

Crikey that's frustrating. I can see why you persevered!

I think some people are just a tad inadequate and get brain freeze when confronted with anything they perceive as more complicated.

You might find this interesting (or perhaps just really annoying 🤣) -
There is a strong culture amongst gens younger than millennial's that they call 'don't care'
Whatever the problem is, it's yours not theirs. They simply default to 'don't care'

I asked my sons if it was true and they said very much so. That the world is in a sh*t state, the older gen's don't care about them not being able to afford to live and just label them as lazy so they adopted 'don't care' in response.
It works for them on many levels, it just doesn't work for society as a whole.

We experienced a bit of 'don't care' a few weeks ago.
Mr SSOAP took my laptop back to the apple store because it was playing up. The young woman told him he must of bought it somewhere else because she couldn't find an email receipt. Mr SSOAP replied no I bought it from here. She insisted it must of been a different shop, he said I know where I bought it from don't be silly.
She didn't like this so just walked off!

Then on the same trip we were in starbucks and asked for almond milk. We both got dairy milk so Mr SSOAP took it back to the counter and said this is dairy milk I asked for almond milk. She stared back and said nothing. He politely repeated he'd asked for almond milk and the same thing happened, no response, she walked away and started doing something else. Apparently it's part of 'Don't care' !!

Part of 'don't care'?
I'd call it part of downright rude, grrr

You'd probably get a reaction if you poured the milky coffee over her head, and then walked away muttering "I don't care!"

IMO it is very rude but it works doesn’t it cos you’re left standing there without your problem resolved and they’ve not said anything that will get them in trouble, the most likely outcome is you end up looking unreasonable as you call out after them.

The guy in the Apple Store that took over from her did say sorry, not his fault though is it.
The Starbucks woman had the audacity to smirk at me as I left. I think she gave us the wrong milk just for entertainment.
So I walked back, stood opposite her and gave her my best silent Paddington bear stare until she stopped smirking and started getting very uncomfortable, then I smirked at her and walked off. Heyho.

I probably would've been upset enough to spill something on the counter...
