• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

Sometimes I hate family.

Back in June when we were in the UK, we left a card with family for my brother's wedding today. No prizes for guessing what's happened.

To say I'm pissed off or gutted is putting it mildly. My relationship with my brother has been tetchy for years (younger brother). He's taken offence at little mistakes, such as me forgetting to amend the name when I sent a message to all my siblings individually so the person concerned didn't know. With my Grannie's approach to names (go through everyone until the name fits approach), brother 1 and I have never batted an eye over being called the wrong name, but he didn't really know our Grannie the same way brother 1 and I did... so he had a massive strop and didn't speak to me for 2 years literally. He's also very upset that we can't afford to go to his wedding. We didn't attend our sister's wedding either. Both were 3 months after we'd left the UK and flights are not cheap. 2 × rtn flights in premium economy (neither of us can do economy, me for my back and my OH for his ankles) at the cheapest time of year are £5,000 (A$10,000). That doesn't cover any of the extras at all, not even food or lounges on long stop overs.

So, with things being a bit better between us, I'd made sure that the postal system didn't screw it to for me, and left the card with family. Now they're denying it. Claiming they thought it was strange we'd not left one with them.

Right now, my other brother is stopping off at a town along the motorway to try to buy a wedding card on a Sunday, the day of the wedding, to fake our signatures for us. ❤️

I'm just so upset  . We'd taken great care finding the right card for him and his fiancée and left a message apologising that we couldn't be there for him etc. All for nothing.

Sorry to hear, SatNavSaysStraightOn. Families can be really difficult. My husband is estranged from his family (no contact, for over 6 years now), I understand how it can be.

Weddings are also kind of a forum for people getting offended - if you manage to get married without anyone getting offended, you deserve a prize. I had a very small, low-stress wedding with less than 50 people, and I still had at least 3 people get their noses out of joint over stupid stuff.

Wise words.

So I saw the funniest thing when I was taking my coffee cup to the sink. I had thrown out two peanut butter sandwich wedges for a couple of squirrels who were hanging out on the deck earlier. I just saw one of the squirrels eating the peanut butter sandwich on the deck (normally they jump up on the rail). I saw this stray cat approach from behind. The squirrel did not see him. The cat came up and...took the sandwich right out of that squirrels paws and trotted off with it. That squirrel immediately freaked out, ran up the tree, started making those weird warning signals that they do...

Obviously the cat was way more interested in eating peanut butter than he was the squirrel. At least for today.

Ozzie can do peanut butter...

My moms cat loved peanut butter, he ate it off a spoon.
I usually do that as well, but today I was on for a surprise. My OH bought a different jar from normal, usual brand though, so i didn't think twice about lunch, bread and peanut butter, then i dipped the only used on bread teaspoon into the jar to get a bit more and popped it into my mouth...

:yuck:

It was sweet! Sweet peanut butter. Yuck yuck yuck. If anyone knows what to do with it, it's a full large jar that's going to waste here literally.

Nigellas ‘Reece’s’ Cups? They are sweets but if you’re approaching it as a sweet treat that might work 🤷‍♀️

You can put it in the same bin I put mine in
I'll flush the contents down the toilet... the septic tank will get a good feed and the jar is a nice side mouth so will be good for jamming or chutney.

Well I dropped of my daughter and her husband at the airport. They land in Dublin at 8 a.m. with a 2 hour layover before a short flight to Birmingham.

I picked up a free steak from TGIF (Thank God it's Friday is a USA casual restaurant). I used to mystery shop them years ago and I had a bunch of rewards points from that. The problem is all Ohio locations have closed except for the one in Brooklyn, OH, which conveniently is 5 miles from the Cleveland Airport. It's a strip steak because they don't have ribeye or filet. We don't love NY strip steak so I'm making Philly cheesesteak sandwiches later.
