The General Chat Thread (2025)

it can be very confusing to read a long series of new posts that are totally unrelated to the thread topic.
I’ll add to that that I do occasionally do a little research in the Cafe topics - just because it’s the non-food area doesn’t mean there aren’t little gems of know-how sprinkled here and there, and going back to find some bit weather-related knowledge that was shared, and having to dig and dig and dig some more, only to find it in some completely unrelated topic isn’t helpful at all.

We’re not transitory, like FB or Instagram or Tik Tok, which is a good thing, IMO. I can’t count the number of times MrsT has said, “Oh, I saw this dessert on Facebook, would you be able to make that?”

“Sure, show me the post.”

Scroll…scroll…scroll…

“Hmmmm…I can’t find it now.”

That’s not us. We’re organized for referencing a bank of knowledge.

It’s not common like eating Pho for example, you don’t want to share a Pho bowl, you have to get your own bowl.
True for things like that
You don't share your banh mi either
But you do share a lot of your other dishes, and the hot pot. Even banh xeo comes out on 1 plate

I really hate hot pot, only had it once, the amount of soy sauce one has to dip is unbelievable. Banh Xeo can be shared, my husband and I share one as an appetizer before the main course arrives.

Where did you have it?
The hot pot I had (Vietnam) was not heavy on soy at all. Mainly hot broth with lot of spices. Dip your protein or veges and add condiments to your liking.
And totally at the end, you drink the soup.

I had hot pot once. I enjoyed all the many veggies cooked in the broth. But I didn't like boiling the meat.

I like KPot better. You fry/sear the food on a hot plate in the table. But they don't have as many veggies.

My city has a lot of Chinese from mainland, so they have lots of hotpot restaurants here. The broth is not heavy with soy sauce but once you take the meat or whatever you have in your hotpot, you have a dipping sauce, mostly soy sauce.
This is one of the many reasons I don’t go to Korean and Japanese restaurants, you have to dip grilled meat or raw sushi in some sauce, mostly soy sauce.
