What did you cook or eat today (December 2022)?

In Kuala Lumpur in the 90s a friend asked us to cook a couple of dishes for a party he was having at his place. He said that he had an oven with gas burners but nothing else. I prepared the ingredients for a chill-con-carne and my wife decided upon a tom yam khung (prawn). We took the ingredients plus the pans and the cooking and eating implements but discovered that he didn't even have salt and pepper!

Hers. Yes, it's a very, very nice kitchen, much better and bigger than mine. The first time I went over there, I brought my knives, then found that she was massively stocked with Wusthof and similar high-quality knives. And All Clad cookware. And Riedel stemware. And Weber cast iron skillets...

Last night, I just made up the extra sauce from last week's Palestinian Upside Down rice, into another dish of it. I had everything I needed, which was another 500g of rice, 2 more aubergines and 4 more potatoes. Everything else was done, so just a case of defrost the extra sauce, cook the aubergine and potato slices, assemble and bake with the rice.

No picture because just like last week, it's a mess on the plate.

The salad looks great but I'm now jealous of those saltine crackers. You sent me some and I loved them. There is nothing close to them in the UK (which is strange). Cream crackers are the closest match but don't have the same 'tang'.

I love that you love these, because saltines are my favorite cracker, and they’re the most basic of crackers available here. They’re somewhat lowbrow!

They are such a classic. I was surprised that they aren't available in the UK.

They make a version that is only salted on one side, so they work within my low sodium diet. I had some a few hours ago with some chunky peanut butter. I usually have them topped with some cheddar.

You´re right. The closest thing is Jacob´s Cream Crackers, which have about enough cream in them to spread on a squirrel´s toenail.
When I get back there, I´m going to see if I can find Nabisco crackers.

A simple radish salad. But it needs something else. Maybe a dash of vinegar (malt or balsamic) or lime juice. Plus a little coriander leaf?

I added spring onions, coriander and a sprinkling of malt vinegar. It was OK but I cannot see myself winning the chef of the month award!

I also raided the garden veg plot for some broccoli (very tasty and as fresh as it can get, cooked within 15 minutes of being harvested.)

So the evening meal. I roasted the Brussels sprouts with S&P plus oil and served them with a touch of balsamic glaze.

There was also a decent portion of raspberries that never technically left the veg plot .
