• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

What did you cook or eat today? (January 2026)

Vegetarian lahmacun ( Turkish pizza) with lentils instead of mince, homemade garlic sauce, hot sauce, cheese & veggies

Breakfast at Duke’s Waikiki, it’s a buffet so I made sure I ate enough, this is what I ate this morning and a cup of tea and a huge glass of water, nothing was wasted. Very enjoyable.

And here is a view from our table

That breakfast looks scrumptious!

Steak with mushrooms, broccoli, baked potato, and a roll. I cooked the steaks medium rare, but they were chewy, which I wouldn’t have guessed from the pre-cook:

They look perfect, right? It turns out that these were not sirloins, but instead center cut steaks. Those are from the hind leg of a cow, which suggests that this was a muscular cow. Still delicious, with the added benefit that the extra chewing burned off more calories than I would have if this were a sirloin.

Soft Solid Foods for DH

IMG_1205.JPG

Trader Joe's Hatch Chile Mac `N Cheese, cooked til soft baby Carrots and Nathan Hot Dogs cut into coins and browned in a dry pan... DH has happy, other than me reminding him with each bit, "chew on the other side!"

One of my favorites, Poulet au Vinaigre tonight. There's two more servings left for lunch tomorrow, even after boxing a serving up for one of my older tenants that Mrs. GH will run over tomorrow. Plus, I still have two large breasts and tenderloins each for another time, and the carcass, wing tips, neck, and giblets to make stock this weekend.
