What did you cook or eat today? (January 2026)

it has been a bit too hot to eat much - so cold, raw soups have been our requirements - nothing that needs any cooking at all. Even the almonds had their skins on for the ajo blanco this time round. I was not sitting with my hands in hot water!

Tonight, will be a raw pea soup made from frozen peas, spinach (also frozen), spring onions, coriander leaf, parsley and mint. Assuming either of us actually wants to eat that is. We've hit 41.0C here and eating is at odds with what my body wants.

Elk! As in venison. Very tasty lean ground/minced. Great for burgers as the flavour (which is not 'gamey' at all btw) shines thru.
People regularly hunt in this part of the world and it's usual to take large game to be 'processed' and packaged into conventional cuts by local specialty butchers shops. We are given a fair bit amount of venision by friends and relatives.

Now I think about it I suppose I should have known that an Elk was a large kind of deer. I've only ever had 'regular' venison from normal-sized deer in the UK and that only a couple of times. I remember it being darker than beef and it was a bit tough - probably from the cooking.

A local grocer had my favorite (super briny) Chincoteague Salt Oysters last week. I love it! Until now, I've had to wait until I go to the beach to enjoy them or have them overnighted here. I hope they continue to get them. It's so much cheaper than overnighting them.

My husband’s sick, so this is comfort food for him. This is my plate, I did go back for 1/2 more sausage, but I left half of my mashed potatoes, I added more salad too. My husband added 1/2 more sausage and more baked beans.
He must feel well enough that he’s requesting ice cream for dessert.

This is called the leftover soup, everything was from the freezer. Squash, carrots, shoulder pork bone and lots of meat, white beans, kales from the garden, and parsley. My husband will eat for dinner with marmite on toast.
