What did you cook or eat today (June 2025)?

after many years . . .
currently the famous "Senate Bean Soup" is about 1/2 done.

as I put it together I was not impressed - for a mid-way tasting DW opined it to be "really good"
just tried it for seasoning - interesting good, not an "OMG! this is the soup!!" thing, but quite nice.

folklore has it this has been made/served in the Senate cafeteria since o-dark-hundred years - except one day . . .
it is exceedingly simple:
dry navy beans - washed/rinsed/blanched with hot water
boiling water
smoked ham hock
diced onion
salt&pepper to taste . . .
when (nearly?) done, strip meat from ham hock, dice and add back to soup.

Found a .gov site with two versions. They're both really simple so I get the not OMG thing.

somewhere I recall reading a screed that the first version (of that site) is the original -
that's what's on the stove however comma but reduced from two gallons to 2 quarts . . .

(was Navy...) now and then I'll trip over a "genuine USN recipe for xxxx" - it's always in gallons and pounds , , ,
(sigh) I really am not into baking 30 dozen hamburger rolls . . .
destroyer class ships - the smaller/est of vessels with on-board galley/etc - have 200-300 people to feed 3x/day.

That spread is like crack.
There is also a cinnamon toast crunch spread that is supposed to taste just like the "cereal milk" you have left over at the bottom of the bowl. I got some and was super excited to try it and I was incredibly disappointed. It was.....interesting tasting, but not how I thought it was going to be.

Sounds like those "hot" snacks and you can tell it's a chemical flavor and not capsaicin. Bummer mouth taste.

Omg, I can't stand that "xtreme hot" garbage. I love heat, but that $hit is trash. Why do people think a bunch of capsaicin tastes good? It literally taste like hot chemicals. I have to get my heat with flavor or else it just doesn't work for me.

After we'd dispatched sons to North Carolina, and been to the supermarket, it was already 9pm, so nothing like a Capressa to fill a space, even if the photo is blurred.
Tomatoes were bland and the mozzarella, nothing special.

I had my freezer meal with noodles.
Green ones, so I assumed spinachy things.
But no, they were made from sweet potatoes. I should have read in between the chinese characters ;)
Strange stuff. Takes quite long to cook and then they turn translucent and almost "slippery".
Actually quite nice with the sauce, so I may buy them again :)
