It's a bacon or tea maker. The grill is to drape bacon over to cook in microwave, or oven. The slit on the side is to hold a teabag string.

I guess it would be handy because after you cook the bacon you could use it to store your bacon grease, but the problem is it doesn't have a lid. And your bacon is going to have a bend in the middle.

If it's vintage, does that mean it existed before microwaves were invented so it was intended for oven use? I could hardly wrap my head around heating up the whole oven to cook 6 slices, I think I will stick with the ability to cook a pound of bacon (probably 14 slices) on a baking sheet. Or 2 pounds on a half sheet.

Tea and bacon, IDK know how the two things are related other than maybe eating/drinking at the same time, but would you use the same device/utensil to make bacon and tea? Sounds like a PITA to wash...and would why someone would spend that much money on a mug for tea when one can be purchased (minus the fancy slit for the string) for $5 or less!?

Some pottery place probably came up with the idea to make an interesting doodad to sell to customers/tourists.

There was a pottery place just outside the town my dad grew up in, which is now famous for a steeplechase race. They had all kinds of useful and beautiful handmade pottery, as well as doodads and oddities.

I was surprised too, I thought I’d need at least four of those to cook enough bacon for everyone to have a sandwich!!

But I have a bacon rack for the instant pot (ninja version) and the bacon drapes over it in a similar way (bent in the middle) and whats also surprising is it makes really great sandwich’s. Don’t know why, I think maybe the air gaps in the curled bacon adds something to the roll/sandwich 🤷‍♀️

I drape my bacon over one arm only and fit three on each so 21 rashers in total (usually 20).

Restaurants usually cook bacon in a salamander. I still cook it in a skillet. I'm not going to change. :)
