I'm not fond of people who put their dogs in the back of a pick-up. What happens when they hit the brakes really hard or someone hits them may not be very pretty.

In England I believe it is law to ensure your dog is suitable restrained just as you would a child...not everyone bothers about their child.

Theres no specific law but it’s in the Highway Code that a dog (or any pet) should not be able to cause injury or accident.
So if your loose dog caused you to have an accident or became a projectile that caused accident or injury that would be considered driving without due care and attention.

If your loose dog is moving around your car that could be considered ‘careless driving’ which also carries fines and points.

The Highway Code also advises against having your dog on the passenger seat because they could be a distraction which personally I think is a load of baloney.
My dogs are always far happier and more settled in the car when they can easily see me. If I can drive ignoring wailing babies, tantruming toddlers and whinging adults I can easily ignore a dog sat in the passenger seat.

Pippi has her seat and mostly she looks forward. She likes the rivers around here though; I think they have smells...
