In Britain, "maths" is the shortened version of mathematics.

Okay yes, then the shortened word for mathematics in the US is just math. That may seem contradictory, but it's how we do it here. It makes sense to me, but I grew up with it.

We use the singular "math" instead of the plural "maths." It is not a shortened version, just the singular. "Math" is a subject, singular -- just as we study history in school, not histories.

We use the plural in the UK because in our education system we get to employ it more than once

An elderly, but hardy cattleman from Texas once told a young female neighbor that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal each morning.

Kind of the same in the US.

If your are a conservative, they go back to the 1950s, when America was GREAT!

If you are a liberal, they go back to the late 60s, when love was free.

As for me, clocks should never go back -- always forward.
