What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

Put these in the Ocado online basket and checked out.
Then thought best check other supermarket prices because they always give it to you in one area but take it away in another so I often cross check the difference in prices it’s why I have no supermarket loyalties, it can be a big difference but this time the price difference is enormous.
I went back into the order and removed them! Sainsburys tomoz for some birds. Hope they’re in stock!

So for the four birds I want that would be £51.20 from Ocado and £28 from Sainsburys!
Apparently there’s a 200gram weight difference between them (I highly doubt that’s true as Gressingham don’t sell different size whole birds, I suspect it’s bad listing by one or another of the supermarkets) but even if that is true it’s still £3.89 per kilo V’s £6.40?!!

I’m buying these now as back up because I’ve read Avian flu means they’re forecasting a birdy disaster.
I’ve ordered my turkey but it’s possible given the predictions it won’t turn up, so these will be brined, spatchcocked and frozen as back up.

Anyone got any brine ideas? I was thinking orange or cranberry but I’m not sure I like that idea. Plums? Would they impart any flavour in a brine? 🤷‍♀️

I've got some ideas (not mine) but I've only ever eaten one duck. apart from Pekinese.
Fruit would work wonderfully well. Plums ( Pekinese duck, naturally), but I'd also think citric: orange, lemon, grapefruit. Or something wierd like blackberries, blueberries or cranberries.
You could, of course, inject it with rum, white wine and orange juice, slather it with garlic butter and say "fusion duck".

I’m not sure the plums would be strong enough to impart much flavour 🤷‍♀️
Blackberries sound good.
I did look at cranberries but it’s too early for the shops to be carrying fresh cranberries and dried won’t make a dent in the flavour of a cold water brine.
I think I will plumb for plums and see what happens. Like Badjak says it’s the sauce that carries the flavour.
I’ll report back sometime after Christmas! 😂

No trial run first?
Maybe even just with chicken?
Maybe but I don’t think so, just because the worse case scenario means the plums don’t impart a lot of plummy flavour to the meat which I don’t see as much of a loss.
If they plum it up a bit then that’ll just be a bonus and as you know it’s the salt n sugar that does most of the work anyway. Maybe a bit of lemon rind wouldn’t hurt.

Mr SSOAP has just returned from the supermarket triumphant with three ducks and some plums 👍
Someone arrived just behind him and watched as he took one duck, two ducks and on duck number three the woman exclaimed “Oh no” 😂
Fortunately there were four there and the OP only needed one 😊
