Milk stout originated in late 19th-century Britain, blending lactose (milk sugar, unfermentable by yeast) into dark stouts for added sweetness, body, and perceived nutrition, with brewers marketing it as a tonic for invalids and nursing mothers, with Mackeson's brewing the first commercial version around 1907-1910, becoming a popular, restorative brew that later saw revivals, especially during the craft beer boom.
