When is a coffee not just a coffee?

I know what a flat white is, they’re common in coffee shops here.

I usually just drink plain old coffee, with cream. Sometimes a cappuccino if I’m feeling fancy. My office has a super fancy-pants machine that grinds the beans fresh (and you can choose the proportion of caffeinated/decaf beans, so you can get a half-caf or even quarter caf).

Funny enough I prefer the coffee I make at home with my little Aeropress, but not really feasible for an office of 70 people.

We have the whole enchilada of coffee names here, depending on where you go for your coffee.

The places we go, coffee is just…coffee, and you might say decaf or regular, with cream and/or sugar. That’s diner/greasy spoon coffee.

Go to the fancy coffee shops, that’s where you get the flat whites and americanos and the macchiatos and all that. On the rare occasions I go to those (2-3 times a year), I get stubborn and say, “Whatever you have that’s just a regular coffee, please.”

When is a coffee not a coffee? When it's 90% whipped cream and chocolate and gelatine bubbles and pumps of raspberry or caramel sauce. Then it's just milkshake with a shot of coffee in it.

I'm usually an Espresso or Macchiato man when I'm out and about, or sometimes I grab one of these cold cans of Japanese brew. At home I used to drink Nespresso but I was pounding about 5 or 6 a day and it was getting too pricey, so the machine is in the cupboard now and I just drink instant. I'm in it for that caffeine hit really and don't drink coffee as an event.

I refuse to pay for coffee prepared by someone else. I make coffee with a press and it's always just coffee using a dark roast, chicory by volume equal to 25%, and water less than boiling but at least 204°F.

Perfect everytime. 👍

I can't remember the last time I ordered coffee out, but it must have been while on vacation. That's the only time I'd do that. I'm guessing it was in Mexico probably 7 years ago at a resort in Cabo San Lucas.

There's a deli we go to where I always get their iced coffee with breakfast. The ice cubes are made with coffee so the coffee never waters down as they melt. It's a little more expensive than their regular coffee, but they will refill so not bad. The only other time we get coffee out is espresso after dinner.

I had no idea that there was such a thing as chicory flour, though. Have you ever tasted that?
Yes! I've made chocolate chip cookies with added chicory flour. If you order the flour from Chicory USA they enclose a recipe sheet and their receipts are always hand signed. Mom and Pop outfit. 🙏
