They do have a muddy taste, my daughter liked it though.Catfish are good! No scales, few bones, it's all protein at the end of the day. Used to catch them a lot in Cross Lake in Shreveport, LA.![]()

Depends on the water. It's a lot like the river fish here. They do have a muddy taste, my daughter liked it though.
Hog fish are technically bottom feeders, they root through coral and sand looking for tiny crustaceans. They have white flesh and a very pleasant taste.Plus some religious beliefs. Bottom feeders are shunned on in some circles. I know when I mentioned cat fish, people at the senior center said they are bottom feeder so I now stop eating it. It’s not like I eat a lot of catfish before, I only bought one catfish because my sister likes eating it.
I have to google for Hog fish, never heard of this fish. Cool though.Hog fish are technically bottom feeders, they root through coral and sand looking for tiny crustaceans. They have white flesh and a very pleasant taste.

Never had eel. Sure not going to find it around here, at least not in a store...A lot of people here don't want to eat catfish as they are bottom feeders and eat anything. But then they go ahead and ead fresh water cray fish, which are basically the cockroaches of the river.
Makes me giggle
I love catfish, crayfish, lobster and eel.
But I don't think I would go out of my way to eat cockroaches![]()
Smoked eel is/was common in the NetherlandsNever had eel. Sure not going to find it around here, at least not in a store...
I agree. I'll eat liverwurst.I don't like the texture of liver but I will eat paté and liverwurst
You are right in saying it is now an endangered species. But it wasn't when I was a youngster. Hence me saying it was/is common in the Netherlands.Eel is critically endangered and at high risk of extinction.
Even with some reasonable conservation efforts by some countries there are no Eel stocks that are considered ok.
I don’t eat endangered species and I would hate to feel I was contributing to their extinction.
But each to their own!

I've been away for close on 30 years.
It used to be very cheap.... But got more and more expensive.
And even though I like it, I'm happy to eat smoked mackerel instead![]()
Yeah, all of my brothers won’t eat clam and oyster for the same reason. I eat them, but I must admit catfish has a funny taste. All these people I talk to who are not keen on catfish are Japanese decent, their families have been here over 100+ years, so that is why it’s surprising.A lot of people here don't want to eat catfish as they are bottom feeders and eat anything. Eel is technically a fish, but it does look like a snake. I love eel but they are prized here, you don’t see them at an Asian supermarket even, only at Japanese restaurant where you can find some eel sushi.Smoked eel is/was common in the Netherlands
I didn’t know it’s an endangered species either, it was abundant when I was growing up.You are right in saying it is now an endangered species. But it wasn't when I was a youngster. Hence me saying it was/is common in the Netherlands.
