fruit

In botany, a fruit is the seed-bearing structure in flowering plants that is formed from the ovary after flowering.
Fruits are the means by which flowering plants (also known as angiosperms) disseminate their seeds. Edible fruits in particular have long propagated using the movements of humans and animals in a symbiotic relationship that is the means for seed dispersal for the one group and nutrition for the other; in fact, humans and many animals have become dependent on fruits as a source of food. Consequently, fruits account for a substantial fraction of the world's agricultural output, and some (such as the apple and the pomegranate) have acquired extensive cultural and symbolic meanings.
In common language usage, "fruit" normally means the fleshy seed-associated structures (or produce) of plants that typically are sweet or sour and edible in the raw state, such as apples, bananas, grapes, lemons, oranges, and strawberries. In botanical usage, the term "fruit" also includes many structures that are not commonly called "fruits", such as nuts, bean pods, corn kernels, tomatoes, and wheat grains.

What one fruit do you dislike the most?

I was reading an article yesterday that listed a number of things this person didn't like about x, y or z... It got me thinking. When I ate meat, I used to hate eating gammon. With fish and seafood it was sardines or more accurately still is, I can't stand even the smell of them. I can't name a...

Has anyone ever made a Fruit Cake Before?

I want to try making one for Christmas! Every year, I keep on saying that I want to make one, but never do! Does anyone know of a good recipe for one? It does not have to be fancy. It can look like the one pictured above, which was baked in a bundt cake pan. Have to get that also.

    Sumo Citrus

Have you even heard of them? I hadn't until they arrived in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago and we decided to try them. They are the closest in sweetness and taste to the oranges and satsumas straight off the trees that we ate whilst in Greece and Turkey on our aborted world cycle tour...

Recipe Goat's Cheese and Stone Fruit Tarts, Two Ways.

I had the idea of making individual goats' cheese and stone-fruit tarts but couldn't decide whether to use nectarines or plums or whether to use tarragon or lavender. So I decided to mix and match and make both. Its important to use a sweet plum for this recipe. Sour plums don't work with goat's...

Do you eat much fresh fruit in a week?

Late last year I noticed that I wasn't eating as much fresh fruit as I used to, so made an effort to try and have three or four pieces per week. I now take an orange to work each day to have at lunchtime and eat apples on a nighttime if I get a bit "snacky". How much fruit do you normally eat...

When it comes to fresh fruit, do you have a special time of day that you prefer for eating them? I know most people like to eat their fruit first thing in the morning as part of their breakfast. Others like to have their fruit after having their lunch, and some may prefer to have fruit at...

    Fruit Salads

    Picking your own fruits

When I was a kid, I was lucky to live not too far from a berry picking farm. It was lovely to go there and pick fresh berries (and sneak quite a few into our mouths - don't worry, that was 100% allowed!) Right now I'm not living somewhere that has direct fruit picking nearby which is a bit of a...

Is an avocado a fruit or vegetable?

I bought one recently thinking it was a fruit and could be eaten as such, but when I peeled it the inside was very dense and, to be honest, a bit tasteless (the texture wasn't all that pleasing to my mouth either). It looked, smelled, and tasted like a vegetable. But it has a stone, so does that...
