• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

Alphabetic town and related food game

When we finished school back in the late 60s, many of us took a break year. I worked for 9 months in the Driving Licence Dept, in County Hall, and then went on a month's trip to Italy with my best mate. First stop was Firenze (Florence), where we mostly ate pizza, because it was cheap. It was also the first time I'd eaten artichokes (which were on top of the pizza) and a pizza called "zingara", which was dotted with peperoncini.
Then there's always Folkestone, a pretty seaside resort on the Kent coast. We used to go there as kids because the bus from Maidstone to Folkestone stopped about 50 yds from our house. I doubt we actually ate anything in Folkestone; too poor in those days. We probably took sandwiches and brought home a stick of Folkestone rock.

F for Florence.
Florence - I’ve been to Florence twice but the first time I stayed at American hotel because it was free for me, it was not at the center of Florence. So the next time I came back I rented an Airbnb near the center, it was close to a place that sold head cheese, the line outside this shop was unbelievable, so that was something stood out in my memory about Florence. Head cheese and red wine to cut down the fat. The second thing is gelato, we were very close to a restaurant that the locals were frequent, so I knew it was good and very cheap. Only took cash I believe. We went to this place everyday for breakfast and every night for gelato, it was hot, June/July time frame.

F is coming into play
(French pizza for Puggles :) )

First thing I would think of is France, but it's a country, not a town. Still great food most if the times ....
French pizza? As in French bread pizzas? If so, those are great, when they're homemade, stouffers version though, is garbage.

I don't know stouffers...
One of France's pizza's is the pissalidiere, another one is torte flambée (flammkuchen)

I forgot to add Crete for C, it’s a favorite place for seafood lovers, and the roasted lamb was also wonderful. We also had gelato every day.
This is a place that I would be tempted to come back again and the people are very friendly.

G is in play...

Gois in Portugal. Nice little town. Very hilly area
Went to dinner there in a very small restaurant. 3 menu choices on the blackboard. Only one available, so an easy choice. Great food.
There was 1 Portuguese family in the restaurant plus the 2 of us.
The owner was serving and walking around with a bottle of cava, serving shots to everyone and himself
His mum was in the kitchen.
We had a good laugh. A couple of shots helped improve our Portuguese and his English.
Desert was a chunk of flan out of a big ancient looking vessel
Bill was calculated on the paper table cloth.
So much more fun than going to pizza inn or mcdonalds (the 2 other options in town)

There are two "Gs" in Venezuela; Guarenas and Guacara. Guarenas is really a sort of satellite town for Caracas, so there's nothing too exciting going on there. Guacara is close to Valencia, and when I was travelling for work, I'd often stop there for breakfast. Arepas (corn bread) or a freshly made cachapa (sweetcorn pancake filled with fresh white cheese)

I racked my brain to get a G, it turns out I live very close to Garden Grove and Gardena . Garden Grove is a hub for a lot of Asian restaurants, very affordable prices because of the competition.

Gardena is South of LA, has lot of Asian restaurants, maybe more Japanese because there are a few Japanese car companies there.

Ooooh, I've just remembered another "F" (not the word, the place  )
Frankfort, Kentucky.
We were in Cincinnati and went on a day trip to the Buffalo Trace bourbon distillery. A fascinating tour, but nowhere to eat. We drove off into the sunset and eventually found a little place, not that far from the distillery, called "The Stave".
Kentucky classics, like pulled pork, burgog and cornbread, hoe cakes and crawfish crabcakes. The owner and manager was fascinated to know we came from a wierd place called "Venezuela" and was very chatty and friendly. Over 100 different bourbons behind the bar, too!
