I get it at GMC Value-Mart. It's a locally owned grocer. I get a block there for around $5 and when I melt it into a tub it precisely fills the smaller sized $8 Crisco tub.Where do you get them, it’s not sold here.
You might want to take a look when you go. Our grocery recently started carrying cooking fats beyond oils, lard and Crisco. I just happened to notice them a couple months ago.Where do you get them, it’s not sold here.
It sure is!Every time I smoke a brisket, I save the fat trimmings and render it into tallow in a disposable pan. I'll usually get about 3-4 cups worth. Good stuff!
This was 3 lbs. when I got it and it was $5 and some change.TBH, I’m still nervous of eating thick fat like that. I’m certain will not waste them if I cook something, but I wouldn't pay $6 a jar for beef tallow.
I remember throwing away goose fat, it’s supposed to be good for cooking.
That's cool! Here it's like gold plated...
You are in a part of the country where it's common to use that and where small farms butcher beef and pork, plus sell chicken eggs, fresh milk and cream, etc. In large cities, we really only have access to commercial brands, and they aren't cheap. Even if we take a long drive way down south or way up north to where there are small farms, stuff isn't cheap, if for no other reason than land is extremely expensive compared to where you live. This was 3 lbs. when I got it and it was $5 and some change.View attachment 140249
Yes, I'm fortunate to live here in this place of family owned grocers. After 37 years in Las Vegas, land of nothing, I am grateful. You are in a part of the country where it's common to use that and where small farms butcher beef and pork, plus sell chicken eggs, fresh milk and cream, etc. In large cities, we really only have access to commercial brands, and they aren't cheap. I bet SoCal is pretty much in the same situation as we are.
