Booze

I got spoiled in Las Vegas, Nevada. You could go to Walmart and there's a liquor section right there on the way to checkout so you could leave with your grub and alcohol and on the way out of the parking lot pull through the gas lanes and fill up. Next stop is Ammo Barn and we're done!
How about NOLA where you used to be able to buy liquor at the convenience store/gas stations? I don't know if they still do that or not, but in the 1980s they surely did.

I don’t like any of it TR.
America’s supposed to be ‘the land of the free’ a country that prizes personal freedoms and independence, feels like thats a law thats influenced by greed and moral straitjackets.
You all ran those Puritans off for a reason, y’know. 😉

That’s how a lot of our supermarkets are set up, there’s always one or two like that everywhere you go.
Fuel up at the supermarket petrol station and buy everything you need in one spot.
I can think of four near here. Three of the four also offer all sorts of other services like dry cleaning and a pharmacy.

That's so convenient for sure. Where I'm living now in Georgia they roll the sidewalks up at 7 PM... 🤷‍♂️

That’s how a lot of the Kroger supermarkets here are these days. They seem to have gotten the contract to run the state liquor stores, so there will be a separate and distinct liquor store inside the Kroger.

Beer, wine, and mixers are out in the proper grocery area (along with lower alcohol things like Baileys), but whiskey, rum, vodka, etc are inside the separate liquor store.

That means it can be a real bear looking for something like bitters. Also, even though the liquor store is inside the grocery store, it’s a completely separate entity (even though it’s staffed by grocery store employees and uses the grocery store’s point-of-sale system), so you’re strictly forbidden from bringing any groceries inside. All the carts and basket will be parked up around the entrance.

I’ll take a picture the next time I’m in there.

Here too: pharmacy, dry cleaner, liquor, lottery, food, and fuel.

Giant Eagle and Meijer, too, plus a few regional small chains specific to my area.

We can pick up booze at supermarkets, off licences (liquor stores), petrol stations (some, not all) and grocery stores, but not pharmacies.
If you're down by the beach, there'll be fellas wandering around with coolers to sell beer, or even mix you a piña colada or rum &coke on the spot.
There are several high-end places which sell fine wines and spirits as well. These seem to have (gradually) converted into Gourmet places, where you might also be invited to a wine tasting, of a whisky/rum tasting. I've got an invitation next Wednesday for Los Vascos wines.

Here I am, walking to the Kroger (from McD’s):

I’ve circled the little logo on there that designates this as a Kroger equipped with a state liquor store (OHLQ).

I was in need of some grenadine and some bitters. The Kroger app said the bitters would be found on the wall outside the liquor store entrance (more on that later), but it was actually here:

Right up there next to the Coco Reál…

Next aisle over starts the wine:

Kroger doesn’t really carry anything too unusual, just row after row of cabs, pinots, chardonnays, etc. You won’t find any Rioja, for example, or any Grüner Veltliner.

Onto the beer:

This covers beer and alkipops, and the latter seem to take more shelf space every day.

More to follow.

Finally, onto the liquor store itself, but first…

That’s the sad little wall of lower-alcohol stuff. That’s where the bitters I was looking for was supposed to be.

Ahhh, the entrance to the hard stuff - note that it has its own merchandise scanner thingy, and no carts allowed, as you’re technically leaving Kroger to go to another shop…doesn’t matter that it’s inside the store.

Small liquor store by most standards, just four shelves, along with some stuff behind the cashier and along the back wall, but it carries the basics - lots of bourbon, because of where we live, and lots of vodka. Those seem to be the two main things, but there’s rum and gin and a smattering fancy liqueurs in there as well.

similar to uk, but here the spirits are in the isles same as the wine / beer, and I've not seen a major supermarket give fridge / chiller space to packs of beer in uk

in USA laws are all different in every state, and within (some states) it varies by county/parish.
in short, there are no rules one can count on . . .

Pennsylvania is only shortly out of the Blue Laws era, and only much recently allowed wine and beer sales in supermarkets/gas stations - subject to quantity limits (!).
beer stores / markets have long existed - beer only - no wine, no nothing else. oh, wait, they sell distilled spirits (I think...) slushees by-the-glass...

but in PA you can only buy "distilled spirits" at a state owned/operated store, they also sell wine and more recently 'premixed drinks' in a can.

A lot of them do down here a long with some cider.
Even a tesco express will have beer in the chiller cabinet. Not boxes of it though, four packs and individual bottles 👍
