I have always been a lover of brown sauce on certain foods. My favourite is "Hammond's Chop Sauce" which unfortunately is difficult to obtain (I need to import it from UK). I dislike HP sauce (I find it too sweet) so I am currently searching for a suitable alternative.

Our local "up market" supermarket has begun to stock a Waitrose sauce called "Essential Brown Sauce". Has anyone heard of this sauce and tried it? Although it sells at £1.00 in the UK (480 gms), the price here is the equivalent of £3.25 for the same quantity.

Is brown sauce like brown gravy, or more of a condiment, like ketchup?

Yes mate, Mrs Blank was the meat and fish specialist at Waitrose Chester. At £0.85 inc discount it was okay but certainly not as good as HP or Chop. At £ 3.25 I would only buy it if I could not get HP here. Have you thought

HP is available everywhere here (roughly £5.50 for 600 gms) but I don't like HP - too sweet for me. So is the Waitrose sauce akin to HP or Chop? There's a massive difference in taste.

I love it. Any sort really. Apparently Tiptree make a good one which I have yet to try:

Their blurb: A rich fruity brown sauce made using a traditional recipe from the 1850's. The thick sauce has a tangy but smoky flavour, a real 'home made' feel.

Tiptree are great. I have a jar of their orange and whiskey marmelade here 😍

I've tried it. I thought it was good. Not sure if I'd pay £3.25 for it though!
