Cucumbers

I've been eating cucumber sammie's with homemade mayo on MG's favorite, white bread! 😲 I think I've got around 5 lbs. in the fridge, the vine is yellowing now that it's getting cooler at night so it's slowing down.
Do you cut off the crusts? MG would frown upon mayonnaise, so if she comes to your house you'd better sub it out with something else.

No crusts, no cream cheese just bread butter and cucumber neatly sliced and presented. That's it.

Over here if you're a deviant (ie someone who messes with the basic rules of a cucumber sandwich) you are incarcerated in the tower until you see the error of your ways.

It's a bit like the crappy British version of a Japanese tea ceremony, you could do something different but it'll always be wrong 😆

Butter and cucumber together makes my head explode.

So these cucumber sandwiches are flying by the seat of their pants when it comes to what's acceptable.
The cucumber was deseeded and cut lengthways not in thinish rounds. The finger shape of the sandwich is also borderline.

Fortunately a top barrister took pity on me and argued brilliantly that it was a moment of temporary insanity brought about by the well known CGD 'cucumber gluttony disease' so I managed to avoid gaol and was instead cruelly barred from any cucumbering for 6 weeks. Of course the societal shame is still hard to bear 🤣

I’ve never used white pepper. I’m suspicious she simply chooses white because she’s frightened the popo will be able to see the black specks and she’ll be back on a charge.
I’d pay more attention to Ms. Cloake’s musings, but I’ve always found her modesty and self-deprecation so off-putting. I really wish she’d show a bit more confidence in her opinions!

(Yes, that’s dripping with sarcasm! )

My utterly practical opinion is that, if you've got good bread, decent butter, and properly seasoned fresh cucumber (and puh-lease! No need to remove the seeds from a British cucumber!), then you've nailed it. It's not rocket science or brain surgery; it's cucumber on buttered bread.
Now a Mumbai sandwich - that's quite a different kettle of fish veg! :D
I have to admit I find Felicity Cloake unbearably prissy.

Love her or hate her she does her homework and always gives some great references for other quality chefs take on things.
I don’t like Nigella Lawson or my accountant or financial planner but I still listen to what they have to say 😂

I love white pepper and I think it has a rightful place in a cucumber sandwich. It has a certain lemony prickling taste which works very well with cool cucumber.

I agree. Her homework is exemplary. But she isn't really a cook at all. I discovered this when I bought this book: one big yawn...

Yes

She does the homework though, which I find useful.
