Someone on the forum recently mentioned vacation and “day drinking” - drinking alcohol during the daytime hours, especially during the workweek, as opposed to the perceived “norm” of reserving that activity for the evening hours and later.
That reminded me of one of those toss-away articles I’d read a while back, from Condé Nast or some other group like that, with a title like “10 Things US Tourists Do That Confuse Europeans,” and it touched on day drinking…or rather not day drinking.
The gist was, right or wrong, that Europeans have no issue with a glass or two of wine a lunch, maybe some sort of aperitif in the late afternoon, and then drinking socially on into the evening, where US tourists seem to hold back drinking during the day, then furiously play catch-up starting at 5PM or thereabouts, and proceed to get completely pie-eyed by 9PM, while the genteel Europeans who have paced themselves all through the day sit back and tut-tut the poor inebriated Americans for not being able to handle their drink.
The article itself, no doubt, just a piece of fluff. It did, however, get me ruminating on this concept of day drinking, especially during the workweek.
Any US employer I’ve ever worked for has had strict rules about alcohol consumption during work hours - don’t do it unless it’s a pre-approved special circumstance, and those were few and far between. I’m sure this is a result of our lingering Puritanism.
Even when I was in the military, having a beer at lunch, in uniform was a no-no…until I was stationed in the UK, then we had permission to have a single beer/glass of wine at lunch, so as not to offend our host nation, where a lunchtime beer or glass of wine wasn’t unusual. Yes, it was actual written-down policy.
Now, with so many of us working from home, out from under the watchful eyes of strict bosses and tattletale coworkers, I wonder how many folks here in the US are having a morning mimosa…a lunchtime libation…an afternoon aperitif?
Anyway, I don’t really have a specific question for the group, just more of a “share your opinions/thoughts about day drinking, please.”
