How do you feel about eating alone? Do you prefer it to eating with others? Or maybe its simply different and a chance to indulge in foods others don't really like. Do you ever eat alone in a restaurant? I used to do that a lot, when I lived alone in London. I'd take a book with me (it was before the days of smart phones). I loved it. I revelled in the fact I was being looked after by the waiters. I chose those restaurants carefully.

But some of us have no choice but to eat alone (that would be me as of late). I don't mind it at all, but I suppose I never have done. However, I know it can be a lonely affair and that for some people things simply taste better when shared.

What do you think?

I definitely prefer to eat with family and with friends. I don't mind eating alone in the house, but pretty much never go to a bar or restaurant alone. The exception is when I go hiking/fishing in the big woods for some "me time" on the weekends and often like to cook lunches over an open fire or packable stove, but that could be a whole another thread. That I very much enjoy.

I like to eat alone a lot and I don't mind at all. When I was younger, I ate alone a lot. Even when I was working, I went out by myself. I noticed or observed, when most people eating out at lunch during work hours, I often heard a lot of complaining about people in general, it can be very stressful. I was glad to lunch alone.

Now that I’m retired, I often go with my husband.

When I was young and single, I ate at restaurants by myself, all the time.
No one else I knew had enough discretionary income to do so.
On top of that, I'm a foodie, I love food, good food, something I wouldn't make at home and living at the time in Hawaii, there were loads of fantastic places to go, as is today.
Since having married, I eat with my family and friends.
Funny, just the other day, I took DH to yet another dental appointment that was early and long.
I took myself to a local Mom&Pop diner type breafast/lunch joint, sat at the counter and had a lovely breakfast in peace.
I could only eat half of my meal because I'm old and usually share with DH, so he got the take-out box for brunch later, once his mouth wasn't numb!!!
I forgot how nice it was it eat alone to be honest.

When I eat alone (there’s a song in there somewhere…), if the place has a counter or bar, that’s where I sit. MrsT absolutely hates sitting at the bar or the counter.

The funny thing is, the unspoken rule is, if you’re sitting at the counter or bar, it means you’re open to socializing a little, so the person two seats down might say something, but I’m generally not open to that.

I always sit where I can see who's coming in. (Las Vegas radar...)
I worked with a lot of ex-cops and ex-military in my past. They always told me to sit with by back to the wall, so I can see what's coming.
I'm happy eating alone, and happy eating with family, friends or a whole load of people in a restaurant. It doesn't matter; the circumstances dictate.

Obviously then never had a surprise circumstance that was life changing...
