Favourite dish beginning with..

For "W":
  • Walnut Cake: Eaten with a nice cup of tea.
  • Walnut Ketchup: Lots of recipes around for this old-fashioned sauce
  • White Pudding: Basically the same black pudding, but without the blood
  • Wow-Wow Sauce: Old British sauce who's recipe was first published back in early 1800's
  • Watercress Sandwich: Perfect accompaniment with afternoon tea
  • Whitebait: Lovely as an appetiser
  • Wholemeal Bread: A staple and great for sandwiches
  • White Chocolate Cheesecake: an elegant dessert. Can be over sweet at times.

W is for wontons. When I can be bothered, I'll make a batch of about 80 of them and most will get frozen for an easy dinner item when I'm a bit rushed for time.

Restaurant ones in chili and black vinegar. I usually order them if I see them on the menu:

Oh yeah.. I know it might be unfashionable to say this, but I love White bread. It's my favourite and always has been. I like a thin or medium-sliced cheapo, bog-standard supermarket loaf. What do I make with it? Amazing moist and soft sandwiches with a variety of fillings: prawns, chicken salad, egg mayo, tuna mayo, ham and cheese, fish fingers, bacon, cheese and tomato, sausage, etc. loads of British classics, but most of all each slice must first be slathered with loads of salted butter and my fillings usually have mayo or salad cream in them. Also, I prefer this bread for toasting.

Last chance hotel then:
X,Y and Z - all at once. The difficult ones, perhaps.
Xonxos - basically, tiny whitebait, served in Barcelona.Xonxos Cal Pep.jpg
Xistorra and potatoes, served as a "tapa". Xistorras are thin, delicious, spicy, Basque sausages.
Xnipec - a Mexican salsa from Yucatan, made with red onions, habaneros, and bitter orange juice. I ate it with some tortillas filled with cochinito pibil in a restaurant in Mexico city.Xnipec (Dog´s nose).jpg

Y would have to be YMCA potatoes for breakfast.
Z for Zaalouk - my new favourite Moroccan dip.

X is for Xiao Long Bao - Chinese soup dumplings. I've eaten hundreds of these lol.

Din Tai Fung is the well-known international chain. They're actually a Taiwanese brand and these ones contain pork usually, or pork and crab mix, prawns etc. in addition to a generous spoonful of soup inside.

Another well-known chain here is Paradise Dynasty. They have this offering which has different flavours - crab, garlic, cheese!, szechuan, pepper, etc. (intenet photo):

Here are some other ones I ate in mainland China over the years (mainly Shanghai as the place is famous for them):

Y is for Yakitori - Japanese grilled skewers of chicken and other things. These ones are from a chain called Tori-Q and I get them every few weeks if I'm out and about and know I won't be cooking.
