Healthy make ahead meals/ snacks

Thank you everyone. I can’t really talk about this with him, but I’m worried sick. I’ll try sneaking some healthier stuff. He’s like a raccoon when he gets home.
We find out how the other kidney is next Friday. Last checked it was 64%. His blood pressure shocks the doctors! We are in our 30s, btw! I’m hoping my near death thing will spur him on to get the op rather than scare him.

Oh my. That's very young to have such serious health issues. I hope that he sees this as a wakeup call and tries to do better. Wishing you the best.

If you are able to, it would be useful to find out the eFGR number for the kidney when next fridays test is done.
I assume the 64% is an eFGR of 64, but cannot tell for certain (eFGR ranges from 100 down to 0)
It may help you feel better to know that IF that 64% is the eFGR then 64% is still a reasonably good function.

The grading of kidney functionality reads like this
GFR Functionality
100 full function
90-99 normal function, no kidney disease
60-89 some loss of function
45-59 mild to moderate loss of function (my last reading was 49)
30-44 moderate to severe loss of function
15-29 severe loss of function - potential problems with potassium (hyperkalemia) and phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia)
1-14 kidney failure

Based on a possibly incorrect assumption that the 64% is an eFGR of 64 ... then I would view the important things to protect the remaining kidney as this:
Focus on a healthy diet
Avoid being overweight
Prevent / treat high blood pressure
Prevent / treat diabetes
Avoid NSAIDs (the 2 main uk ones are ibuprofen and aspirin, a low dose75mg aspirin prescribed as a blood thinner is ok)

You are very welcome.

Please bear in mind that kidneys cannot regenerate the way something like a liver can.
Once they are damaged they remain damaged, so the overwhelming priority is for a person to do all they can to protect the kidney(s) from worsening (see that list I put).

You mentioned his blood pressure - that is something that could harm his kidney, so he really needs to address that.
He may not want to address his diet / lifestyle now, but most recipes can be edited, or ingredients swapped so they fit dietary needs.
The lower kidney functionality gets the more restrictive the diet is likely to be. Acting now to fit food to his health needs could leave him able to enjoy regular foods many years, rather than being faced with a strict diet due to kidney issues.

I knew she was the right gal for this. I wish I had more to offer in the ways of wisdom in this subject. Glad you know how much we all are about each other here. We really are glad you joined us.
