How is the corona virus affecting you?

Getting the family updates this morning:

1. Niece and her family (in California) have been placed under a "shelter-in-place" order. No leaving the house except for food/meds. He's self-employed, so zero income for him and his two employees. She's a teacher, so she's able to do distance learning.

2. Brother's wife came back from an out-of-state trip, coughing and achy. She'd been around a sick friend while out of town. That friend is now being tested, should know in a few days what the result is. She's staying in the house, self-quarantining, and he's moved into their camper in the back yard. Once her friend knows what's up, they'll either get tested or move back in together.

He's the main checker-upper on our aged parents, so now we're working out that. Parents can be a handful because my mom is high energy and always wants to be out running around and my dad has mild dementia and isn't taking any of this seriously. They promise to stay home, then 10 minutes later, jump in the car and go run a bunch of errands.

3. Another brother is a teacher. Classes are suspended right now, so he and his wife were volunteering to hand out school meals to the kids who get those, but she's high risk (similar to my wife), so after today, they're stopping volunteering.

The rest of my siblings are in the same boat as everyone else. Doing ok but putting up with a different world this morning.
My prayers with you.

Is this applying to everyone in that area?

Thanks!

I haven't checked the news this morning, but yes, it's city-wide. All of San Francisco (7M people) are under the same restriction, very similar to what Italy introduced early on.

My niece is in LA, but I'm not sure if it's all of LA or just her city within the LA metro area.

Practically speaking, it's not that different than what people should already be doing (and many are doing) - just going out for food/meds/doctor's visits, but it feels different psychologically, I think, when the government makes it official. They closed all the cinemas nationwide (I think), and we go to the movies twice a year a best, and now that she's forbidden, my wife says she has an urge to go to the movies.

Latest news - first confirmed case in my hometown (Oxford, OH), where all my family still live. I live about 75 minutes away (by car).

I am pretty sure Mountain Cat probably didn't read see your response. Not everyone reads all posts here (I do but I'm probably unusual!). Its most likely she is referring to the sexist use of the word 'girl' when referring to grown women. At least, I think that is what she meant. I am sure she didn't know your step-son is disabled and has a much lower mental age than 20.

Yes, I missed that. Apologies, had no idea it was relating to you/your family.

The Scottish Parliament has just announced that schools are to close. Nothing yet from Westminster, but it's surely only a matter of time before they follow.

Given that Britain is about the only country left in Europe that hasn't done this, it's about time.

My youngest son who relies on a part-time job to pay his rent (he is at university) has been laid off. Its a big brand company that sells shoes - no plans for it to open again in the foreseeable future. Its likely he will end up moving back here which neither he nor I would want.

I fully expect youngest daughter & her partner to end up in the same boat. I could have a lot of people living here soon.

That's terrible. Did your government take no measures to protect workers? Here it's just spent 20 billion to keep these things from happening.

They are starting to do similar things to other European countries, protection for those in rented accomodation is being worked out at the moment. Also the Bank of England has asked employers not to lay anybody off at the moment as support is being arranged for their wage costs.

The delivery estimate was supposed to be the 25th, but we just had this delivered. Why do I feel like I just had a shipment of gold delivered to my front door?

My boss is high risk so from Monday she will be working from home, schools are closing so she will need to be at home for her daughter.

Oh! Toilet paper! Glorious toilet paper! It's been so long since I've seen any...I began to believe it no longer existed, and was just a myth passed down from our elders!

Tell me...is it as soft as I remember? As absorbent? Legend says that humans once cleaned their backsides with just such a product, and not the small, furry woodland creatures we use now.

Congrats on your good fortune! I have to visit "the smallest room" myself now...which reminds me...where's that hedgehog I trapped earlier?...OUCH! Found him!

:) :)
