How is the corona virus affecting you?

JAS_OH1. I get it. It's hard when so many people don't want to make the basic effort to wear a mask. Our governor (IL) mandated that we wear masks in all retail establishments. I think this makes it a bit easier for staff members to approach unmasked patrons.

It seems like something new is coming out each day about the virus and its long-term impact on the body systems. All of us are just trying to do our part to stop or slow the transmission. That should never be a reason to spread hatred.

I normally use curbside pickup when shopping where I order everything online and do not have to go inside of stores. A few times I have gone into stores (double masked). In Ohio it is a state mandate that adults and children over 10 must wear a mask inside of stores and other buildings. I have not confronted anyone personally about not wearing their masks properly, but I alerted store management when I saw a woman and her four children (two of whom were older teenagers) shopping without masks on. The management made them leave and she threw a fit, making a scene as they escorted them all to the door. Also, once when I went to pick up a prescription I saw a police officer, who doubles as a security guard when off duty, standing within 2 feet of a cashier with his mask pulled down around his chin. I took a photo of him and emailed it to the chief of police for my city. Chief thanked me for bringing to his attention so he could address the issue with all of his officers as a training tool. He was definitely not happy that his officer was not complying with state mandates.

So yeah, confronting people in a nasty manner is rude, but maybe the guy was just fed up with people who know better but choose not to comply. It's also rude for people who obviously know how the virus is transmitted to not take the time to help stop the spread. Wearing a mask around your chin or only covering the mouth and not the nose is obviously not as effective as keeping the mask pulled up.

I can't imagine why there is such a controversy about wearing masks and social distancing in the USA.

My wife just home from a week in Queenstown. (Tourist Mecca ) groups have to be less than 100. They had 95 people mingling and eating with guest speakers from all over the country. She said it's just a joke. People had to wear masks but middle seat were vacant on their flights. The free time everyone mingled with golf, karting, bunjy jumping, or plain shopping, mask free. She said the last night they put a band on, cheaper to fly one in than use a local one, wtf?? She said the whole place was jam packed with people on the dance floor. Not a mask in sight. I expect a lot of cases in the next week. I hope I'm wrong. About half the shops here have sanitiser as you enter.

Because we are Covid free events can go ahead as mormal. We recently had the Vale Earth Fair and it was thought that it was the biggest official concert in Great Britain.

Well, I'm sure there is zero chance anyone with Covid-19 will attend, so zero chance of any spread of the virus, right? What could possibly go wrong? :scratchhead:

Well it's obviously a possibility but as we've been Covid free for something like 140 days it's a very, very slim possibility. The only restrictions now in place are on travel into the Bailiwick (Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney). People coming into the island must have a good reason for that travel, must isolate for two weeks and be tested at one week. We have had one or two people try to break this law and they have received fines of thousands of pounds which has rather put off anyone else from trying it.

As I've mentioned before we are very lucky in that we are a small island making it far easier to control our borders but we also had Dr Nicola Brink, our Director of Public Health.
She was preparing for this before Covid reared it's head.

I always knew it was a possibility when we did our pandemic exercise last year," she said. "As Deputy Soulsby [HSC President] has told you, I was really insistent that we did it, as it was a case of when rather than if. We knew it was a risk which is why we spent so much time preparing for it."

Dr Brink and her team started preparing for a potential problem back in January when warnings about Covid were starting to circulate. At this point the rest of Britain was arguing about whether to have a stupid Brexit bong. Priorities eh?

Who is Dr Brink?

Late on Saturday night Dil and I were sitting on the balcony. He looks a million % better than when he arrive. He is a very tough Syrian Kurd who gained political asylum in Norway. He was hunted by Assad's butchers and also Turkish killers. He started crying when he described having covid.

Smaller and/or less populated islands seem to fair so much better. I'm really pleased for you. The tough travel restrictions are the key, I think.
Do you get a lot of imported produce or is the island fairly self sufficient. I'm wondering if that is a factor too.
