My Family Portrait

I have been to Vegas 4 times. My favorite part was fine dining and awesome shows. I started playing slots but quickly became bored. I found Black Jack tutorials on line and learned the basics . I carry a strategy card
I enjoy sitting at the BJ table with an assortment of people . I play the lowest ante table and bet conservatively. In Louisiana we have barge casinos on rivers in NOLA, Baton Rouge , Lake Charles and Shreveport. There are also several Native American reservation casinos. I always have a $ limit. I bring cash and leave the debt card and credit cards at home .
I usually walk away with a few hundred dollars extra in my wallet. It is entertainment. I do not make the side bets. I call them sucker bets. If I am not sure about a play I ask the dealer . I do not consider myself an expert at BJ. I am happy if I break even. The last time I went to a casino I played for 18 hours. There were 2 women at the table who could do a stand up comedy routine . I laughed until tears ran down my legs. I walked away with $600 extra and woke the next morning with my face hurting from laughing so much . The poor dealer was VERY pregnant . As in 4 weeks from her due date. She laughed so much that she had to ask for an unscheduled bathroom break
That is why I play BJ and not slots. Not to mention that BJ has the best odds .
I am not a Horse racing fan . My sister and BILL breed quarter horses . When there is a breeder's cup race I will bet on there babies and win. Last year they sold a colt at auction for $400,000. You know it. They are very smart, successful, sought after breeders.
The sad thing is that I have friends who are addicted to gambling. They a thing in their head that makes them believe that they can get rich gambling. Such an oxymoron . I know that walking into a casino means "make a donation . Give me all of your money. "
I have a bad taste in my mouth about gambling. I made a huge mistake and married a compulsive gambler. I did not know that. He was also a very talented compulsive liar . The marriage lasted 6 months. He cleaned out my savings account, checking account and maxed out my credit cards. It took years to recover financially. I do not have a problem with gambling as long as there is a limited entertainment budget and no delusional thinking about getting rich.
Sorry
I ramble.

What is a strategy card?

I think Game Night is a wonderful idea. Playing cards or whatever. Inviting friends and having buffet-style offerings. Nice spread. Is that brisket or ribs, potato salad and ??? Do your guests/friends bring a dish and/or the libations? Well done @detroitdad

This is a really good group of guys that I get together with. I usually host once a month. Normally its only a one table game (10 players). For my "birthday" game I wanted to go all out. I ended up with 14 friends.

We don't always eat before cards. Sometimes I just put out snacks. Again, since this was a celebration I wanted to feed everyone. My friend smoked the brisket (He could be a professional smoker). His wife made the potato salad. I made the pickled red onions. My wife made the home made baked beans. Everything was phenomenal. I paid for everything this time. Other times whoever is hosting will provide the meat. A few of us will bring side dishes. Then other times, 4-6 of us will meet for dinner somewhere before cards.

I love hearing about peoples life experiences. My wife is not into gambling at all. She would play if we played for free. I've only been into poker for about 15 years. When I started playing poker it bothered her that I would take money to the game. Even if it was only 20 bucks. We came to an arrangement. My hobby, and all my hobby supplies (poker chips, table, ect…) come from my winnings. I "NEVER" use work money for poker stuff. Thank god I'm a decent player lol. I track all my sessions. I know exactly what I have in my bankroll. I know exactly how much I've won in 2019 to the dollar ($1131.00's).

I'm also not a fan of Casinos. I played in one about 7 years ago. When I do I play in the poker room. I would rather play against people than machines. I'm pretty good at reading players, their change of behavior, change in betting patterns, ect….I much prefer the home game sessions. We laugh, we joke, we share drinks together, all while trying to take each others money lol.. I've made some of my closest friends because of this hobby.

FWIW, I like collecting poker chips, and poker chip sets as much as I enjoy playing poker lol.

I don't gamble because it doesn't appeal, don't even play the lottery. If you enjoy it, play sensibly and within your means then why not, have fun.

Do you play for real money? Reminds me - I was playing the slot machines in las Vegas. At about 3 or 4 am, a group of musclebound men came in to empty the coins in the machines. They put heavy rubber wastebaskets down in front of every machine, and gave me five minutes to finish playing so they could empty my machine. Grrrr. Lol.

Yes ma'am. We play for real money. Low stakes, kind of. If you understand how the blinds work. We play .25/.50 with a 100 max buy in. Re buy or add on back to 100 whenever you want.

A strategy card is the size of a credit card. The dealer has one card showing and one card down. Across the top are the numbers 2 through 10 and A for ace. The player has 2 cards. On the left side is the possible total of the players cards and possible combinations like 2 of the same card. At the junction of the dealers card and your hand the is a recommended play - stand, hit, split or double down. No guarantee of a win but your odds are improved by about 2%. I have not been to a casino in over a year. When I do go it is for entertainment with a budget. By playing a low limit table conservatively without side bets I can play for hours and walk away at least breaking even- usually with extra cash in my pocket. Not that I count on leaving with more than I started with.
There are a few casinos in the area that I REALLY enjoy. They have outstanding restaurants. Always have good food as a priority.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. Happy belated birthday @detroitdad

Exactly like we do here, although we are conservative, we go once or twice a year and take only $50 each, and have dinner at our casino. Wife plays 2c slots and I black jack. I agree you meet some nice people at the tables. We are overdue a visit !
