Salads

For some reason which I´ve never understood, our Saturday "dinner" at home in the 60s was always "salad".
We´d have cheese, lettuce, potatoes, coleslaw, cucumber, celery, cottage cheese, pickled cabbage, pickled beetroot, pickled onions in winter. In the summer, however, we´d have all the miracles from the garden: tiny new potatoes, fresh cucumbers, peppers, tiny sweet tomatoes, green beans, radishes..
I´ve never figured out where this "tradition" came from. Anyone else experience something similar?
