Seafood Soups, Stews and chowders.

I've never had it, but think the original is from South Carolina. Because it uses crab roe, it is probably not allowed in states that prohibit the taking of females with eggs (roe).
Forgive me if it's a stupid question, but how do you know whether or not the females have eggs?
 
Has anyone ever had Caldo de Pescado, Mexican fish soup? I wonder if the French had any influence on this dish.
