We came across these yesterday. They have no discernible stem and are roughly spherical about 10 - 15 mm diameter. Apparently they grow underground and have a woody taste. Does anyone know what they are called?

We get button shrooms here and field ones as well. I only like button. Which is funny because as kids we used to pick field shrooms and eat them!!! We get the shitaki and a few others as well. Never seen yours Yorky. !!

What are they like when you cut them through the middle?

OK, they are apparently called "hygroscopic earthstar" mushrooms. These are they sliced after boiling for about 10 minutes.

My wife ate them with very spicy chilli sauce. I think I'll pass.

Apparently they sell for ฿500.00/kg (about £12.50)

Perhaps I should have said what are they like cut through before they are cooked? I used to support the computers of a fungus identification specialist. He was a photographer and did a lot of the photos for several books, but he personally specialised in fungus. I actually found some rare ones by chance on the land we lived on in the UK. Out took him to identify them. Needless tho day he was very excited and I learnt a thing out two about identifying fungus, hence my question. But it is needed before they are cooked... <cough>.

My wife cooked them before I had a chance. She said the innards are much whiter when raw.

My wife received these on Saturday. I have no idea why she thought they were whiter when raw. The two on the bottom right are sliced in half.

Although maybe she's already cooked them? I didn't see her cook them.

Whatever, they still look grotesque to me.

I think tbe same about many things I see humans eat. I'd happily eat them cooked.
