Thai fruits (previously Purple Mangosteen)

First time I've come across these - Amla fruits or Indian gooseberries.

I think it's mandatory to eat chilli flakes with all Thai fruits.

Do they taste anything like gooseberries?

Yes, they do taste a little like the English ones. Harder flesh but with an inedible stone in the middle. Perhaps more sour/bitter than the unripe English gooseberries.

Areca (or betel) nuts.
