The General Chat Thread (2025)

Another meeting with the Indian Festival chef today. He's really enthusiastic about the whole idea. He just shipped in $500 of products we can't find here: Besan (chickpea) flour, papadums, pani puri discs, toovar dal (pigeon peas), black and green cardamom, asafoetida - the whole nine yards. We fixed the menu and, on Wednesday, we're going to start cooking/practising.I'm really looking forward to this.
Next week, on Wednesday, we're going to have a lunch for the local foodie press and the Indian Embassy staff. Then it's showtime!

Has anyone heard of the tiktok craze of kids ringing a doorbell or knocking on a door late at night then taking off. First time I heard about it, I told Craig some kid is going to get killed doing this. Well my prediction has come true. An 11 year old boy was shot and killed a few nights ago, while doing this with friends. Happened at 11 o'clock at night. The guy that shot him has been charged with murder. While he certainly is not innocent, as the kid was apparently shot in the back off the property, what about the kid's parents? Why was an 11 year old out at 11 at night unsupervised? Shouldn't the parents bear some responsibility?

Those kids never lived in the 50s/60s. we used to do that all the time :hyper:
We also used to look in the phone book for people with funny surnames. There was a Mr Smelly who lived somewhere in Kent:
"Good evening. Mr Smelly speaking"
"Phew!" (Hang up) :D

Do you have Prince Albert in a can? You'd better let him out!"

"Is your refrigerator running? You'd better go catch it!"

Prank phone calls were way safer I'm sure. BTW, I never participated in those kinds of shenanigans because my friends and I all had strict parents and would have gotten a whooping! And honestly it just seemed stupid. Oh, but TP rolling people's houses on Halloween...yeah I did that once.

Different times now, and it was older teens that did pranks like that, not 11 year olds that were in bed at that time back then. People never used to shoot up schools or churches either, except for very, very, very rare cases, and now they are nearly common place. And kids used to play unsupervised after dark, but before dinner back then.

Shooting anyone that's not causing you to fear for your life, and you can prove it, is just stupid, much less in the back and off the property.

Georgia is pretty clear, I'm sure most states are, on all of that. Here, unless you're a felon, you can pretty much carry any firearm, concealed or not, anywhere federally permitted. Shooting on your property or in your residence is totally allowed if a threat is presented. Rather a polite place to be...

I can’t comprehend any of it, Americas gun stuff all sounds totally nuts.

Are the royals the only ones who have hunts? I don't personally kill animals other than fish, but I obviously am not a vegetarian so I have no issues with people who hunt.

But the people shooting thing, geeze, no it's awful. I still don't understand why ARs are legal here. It's stupid.
