The General Chat Thread (2025)

I thought is was a perfectly civilised conversation and am disappointed to hear someone has taken umbrage to that extent.

Guess my post about the kid that was shot after playing a prank started it, but I meant it to spark a discussion about parental responsibility, or lack thereof, rather than one on guns. With that said, I too thought the ensuing discussion was civil and cannot understand why someone took offense.

Well, there will always be somebody that wants to control something, no matter the minutia.

I understand both sides. I come from a background with weapons, I live rurally and have done in both countries. I'm accustomed to weapons around me and don't bat an eyelid when I hear live weapons fire at home (I know my neighbours know where the house is, etc).

And I personally have no issues with it on a cooking forum until specifics are mentioned. Calibre of weapons and specific rounds being mentioned goes too far (in this specific environment). Generalised statements such as shotgun, rifle, pistol, are in my view fine.

As I've said, I don't wish to amend the rules, and all I ask is that it is kept the general statements.

it's not the caliber or the rounds.
there is a side that considers the existence of firearms to be unacceptable.
when they get on a tirade about banning all weapons thinking that's going to solve 'the problem' many people simply disagree.

You missed the point.

This is a cooking forum. So the line is drawn in the sand at starting on about specifics.

Keep it general, keep it civil and keep in polite and I'll allow it. Anything else will see posts deleted, and if needed, temporary tread bans etc.

That's the line I have drawn for this cooking forum. It's not up for debate and I can tell you now that that is a long way from what the users concerned wanted.

And it quickly got turned into a discussion about game hunting.

Thinking about getting up and going home but this bed (with my own mattress topper, duvet and pillows) is so comfortable I’m finding it hard to leave.
Plus it’s very quiet here, it’s 10.50am and no-ones bothered me!

Edit: but I do very badly need a cup of tea now so I can’t hold out much longer 😂

Taking a page from my book!

Quiet Sunday morning here for now.

did not miss the point.
the problem is simply that the topic has lots of hot buttons and becomes a political blow-up faster than a speeding bullet, or Superman.
I didn't see anything blowing up there. Seemed like a calm discussion to me even though the participants had different points of view. Saw a couple different angles, actually, but everyone seemed to be handling it in an adult-like fashion, which is what I have come to expect from the forum members involved. But also think the topic had already run it's course by the time SNSSO posted that other forum members were uncomfortable with the subject and her request to avoid specifics.

All I want to add is that yes, this is a cooking forum, but this is general chat, afterall. I still agree that there is no room for any heated nastiness, but I repeat that I would not have expected that from any of the posters involved.

Look at these wild outside lights I bought yesterday and stuck in along the front walk:

The box didn’t say anything about any nutty patterns on the ground, and from the road, they just look like regular lights.

Oh I'm glad I don't like anywhere near to you!

I can't wait to replace our current cheap solar panel lights that are only meant to come on with movement. It never stops they are permanently dim after dark, getting brighter with movement. It drives me batty seeing them on all the time.
