The General Chat Thread (2025)

Well I guess those that voted for Brexit took that away from you, too, not just the youngsters.
People were lied to and didn’t know what they were voting for. The older gens were very easy to mobilise to the polls with similar rhetoric to the stuff used on the folk of the USA. That we’re paying for everything and getting nothing in return, that the NHS will have millions more if we leave and take care of our own, that we should take back control of our country from Johnny Foreigner. So far it’s just cost us dearly. Heyho. Whats done is done.

Some Americans are much less pleasant about their terms for "newbies" in their towns/regions.
Same in most places I think but the IOM natives are nice people.

We have a lot of Americans drinking the koolaid with the current political climate. However, many Americans won't admit they made a mistake and instead are doubling down and trying to rationalize how it was a good idea. Without getting into specifics I think everyone knows what I am referring to here.

Slight change in topic but I have successfully wasted most of my day looking at things on the internet for my bottom drawer **
I chose cutlery I wanted long ago but I was checking out the website today and see two additions to the range that baffled me, I had to look them up.

Apposite considering I ate my first Korean stew today! Google revealed it’s a real thing.

This one though 🤷‍♀️
If it was a measuring spoon maybe the 0.07ml might be important but it’s not so what the difference between an American teaspoon and a British one?

**Bottom drawer is an old fashioned term for a girl who is collecting things for her future marital home. You would save for and be given as gifts things for your ‘bottom drawer’ like linen and cutlery.

We use ours to stir coffee? 🤷‍♂️ 😉

Seriously, I’ve never really thought about it. Do they have a “British/UK teaspoon” on there? You’ll have your answer really quickly if it’s the exact same picture and one costs half-again what the other costs.

I do and as with here once the dust has settled you’ll be hard pushed to find anyone now proudly saying they voted for Brexit or Trump.

Lol. All the pics looks the same. The American teaspoon is slightly more expensive!

Here I've got 2 Korean soup spoons, from Korea. My wife brought them when she came to the USA in 1965.

I don't get it on the tsp and the 0.07 ml. A Tbsp is 1/2 ounce, by volume, and mine is marked 15 ml. When I take the tsp it takes four of those to fill up the Tbsp yet it's marked 5 ml.

Apparently an American teaspoon is 4.93 ml and a British teaspoon is 5 ml 🤷‍♀️
Our Pints, Gallons and Cups are defo different sizes. The teaspoon seems a weird one.

Not to leave it there but it also applies to HVAC. A "ton" of cooling is the BTUs needed to melt a metric ton of ice, not the typical 2000 lb. ton known over here. 🤷‍♂️

Who knows if we can, someone must of come along having spied a minuscule difference and declared irrevocable teaspoon differences until Mr Welch caved and for peace and quiet started manufacturing a special American teaspoon 😂
I’ve been long convinced there’s a secret deep state department that exists between the US and the UK, meant to ensure all language, measurements, etc are purposely kept at “close, but not quite.”

“Ok, we’ve just invented this new widget, and I propose we call it a blippity-blap, so…blappity-blip for your side? Sound good?”

“Yes…that might work, but how about this instead? You call it blippity-blap, and we’ll call it blippity-blap…but we’ll pronounce it slightly differently, like, oh I don’t know…you say BLIP-ity and we’ll say bli-PITY, hmmmm?”

“Oh, I like that, extra confusing because it’s the same spelling and all that! Now, what’s up with these teaspoons? Is everyone in agreement that 0.07ml difference is sufficient?”

“Yeah, but say ours is 0.0024oz different.”
