• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

When I turned 18 that was the age in GA. Two months later it was raised to 21.
It had just gone up to 21 in NY state when I moved there for my first US Air Force assignment, but we were exempted in and kept the 18 drinking age…as long as we drank on base. Off base, it was 21.

Hey! Where did everybody go?

The forum seems to have slowed way down the past few days. And especially today.
Do we have a "where are they" thread where members post about taking time off or going on vacation?

Anyway, that's what I'm doing. Wondering where all the new posts are that I had grown accustomed to seeing when I logged on.

On the other hand there're days when mark read due to sheer numbers...

I thought I posted this yesterday, but better late than never. I wanted to share a new favorite tradition of mine:

Going out to dinner on Halloween

Like most people with adult children, I haven’t had much interest in the holiday in a while. Every year, I would feel obligated to buy hundreds of dollars worth of candy to hand out to the children ringing my doorbell.

There was a friend that we hadn’t seen in a while, and we kept having to reschedule when we were hoping to meet. We all miraculously had time available Friday, so we figured this was as a good time as any. We normally go out to eat around 3 PM, because restaurants usually aren’t crowded then. It took longer than expected to get ready, and we ended up going out to eat about 5 PM. This is around the time when the doorbell would start ringing.

Our neighborhood is the kind that parents bring their kids to from other neighborhoods. If genuinely difficult to even drive your car through the neighborhood when the trick or treating is in full swing. But, by the time we got home, it was nice and calm.

I’m looking forward to a nice dinner next October 31.
I'm with you on this one.
We have been having Trick or Treat with the Neighborhood Gal Pals the past, oh maybe 8 years or so, but there's this one gal who never had children because, SHE CAN'T STAND THEM!
The entire time we're sitting outside passing out treats to the adorable kiddos that come by, she's got a negative comment on each.
I'm not caring for that, at all.
I told DH just yesterday, I like your idea of just plain ole not being here for Halloween and skipping all of that.

There IS a point to some peeps not appreciating kids...

Overpopulated...

The heyday of forums

I remember when you could leave a forum for a few hours and there would be three pages of new posts when you got back.
I used to run a BBS, a bulletin board system, for the library district in Clark County, NV. Being the Sysop I'd be flooded... This was back when the 386 processor running at 40 MHz, 16 megs of RAM, and a 40 meg HD was hot shi$. 😜
