I think the problem is that this is now was the "plans for today" thread.... I will move the posts to the general chat thread, where they will be fine

There lies apart of the problem though ... too much stuff gets moved around too much. Treying to pidgeon hole every post doesn't necessarily work mate - it confuses people hence the number of moved posts.

It was 27 posts totally not relevant in anyway whatsoever to the plans for today thread. Even the post that started it should have been elsewhere. 2 entire pages of posts not relevant to the content is too many. 4 or 5 posts, fine but entire. And most members here say they are here because they don't like the chaos of social media. Well, if we did nothing, 1, I would leave, 2, it would resemble social media and nothing would ever be found, but I guess i wouldn't care at that point because I'd have left.

The problem is only for the mods, really, because we're the ones who have to move the posts. The only confusion to me was what California, sun screen, rednecks, poor white people, driving in cities and bumper-car driving had to do with "Plans for today", because that's where 27 posts went.
We're all guilty of off topic posts and, generally speaking, I'd say we mods are flexible until it gets out of hand. If there's a CookingBites challenge, for example, and the conversation turns to water shortages or how to maintain a good work/life balance. That's when we move in. In the end, it means more order and posts on specific topics are easier to find.

Personally I don’t enjoy the rigidity. I fully understand wanting to keep food related topics nice n tidy so people can find the info they want, and a very nice job you all do on that too, but in an off topic area like plans for today it really stomps on the chatter, one minute everyones having a bit of fun and the next it’s cut down and the conversations finished which doesn’t feel good.
Everyone in the playground simply scatters.

Does anyone go to ‘Plans for the Day’ to find out what other people are doing? Or do they go there to chat?
I’m not trying to be inflammatory. It’s just something I think might be worth having a look at.
Maybe it might be worth considering letting the conversation run on in the off topic areas.
Would save you a bit of housekeeping and perhaps offer a compromise for the users who like to chat 🤷‍♀️

And this should be an item in its own right :)
I know it is not particularly open to discussion as those are the forum "rules" but ....
Mostly I find that there is a reasonable reason for posts to be moved and I think lately it has been communicated a lot better.
Maybe it's an idea to let things go on a bit while many people are posting, then move to it's own thread during "quiet" time.
I can only speak from my perspective and my time zone etc, I chat and post and just respond to posts before me. I hardly ever check the thread name. Then I go to sleep.
In the morning I go to "new posts" and I wouldn't know they have been moved except for a remark somewhere and I continue chatting.
Just an idea

I think the mods are doing a wonderful job, lets get back to plans for the day.

Oops, I post in the wrong thread, this is a general chat thread.
I plan to go out and eat Thai food today. This is a new restaurant for me. I can’t wait to try it out. We have very few Thai restaurants here because this area is expensive, the Thai people have moved out.
We get more Thai food in England and they are cheap too.

Show us the menu when you get there.
I love Thai food..
I don't know how it works in the states, but best way (iinmy opinion) is to order food for the "table" and everyone shares.
(Common for most of SE Asia and probably India and China as well)

Yes we do that for Thai food and Chinese food. Some other Asian food are not served that way.

We have tried to respond to some members' discomfort regarding moving posts to new threads and we are now trying to leave clear links so people can see where they have been moved from as well as a link in the thread from where they have been moved. We also won't move things unless the subject really deviates from the title of the thread for a run of posts and/ or the deviation is interesting in its own right.

In that case we might as well simply have one big general chat thread! There would be ittle point in having lots of 'off topic' thread topics within it. And yet we have a great deal of off topic threads.

In my experience, plenty of 'threads started from moved posts' have created lots of discussion and also included members who might not have taken part in the original thread.

In general if this was a closed community, it might work to simply leave everything be. But mods are aware that for new members it can be very confusing to read a long series of new posts that are totally unrelated to the thread topic.
