The motorbike thread

I'm not a fan of riding with a group or people I don't know - but riding with a "friend" who I know ride similarly to me is good I think.

I have done a couple of group ridfes and hated them - everyone wanted to ride at a 100 MPH and didn't give a cr_ap about anything else. I ride for enjoyment, NOT to get from point A to point B in the quickest amount of time.

To many riders are (in my opinion) reckless and; therefore, dangerous to ride with.

I can agree with the reckless statement. Most aren't educated on safe driving practices and their lack of knowledge and skillset base poses a threat.

Most don't even read the manual on the half ton missile they're riding around on... 😬

I'm probably going to upset some people but as they say - tyhe truth hurts. The biggest issue we have in our area are not with the Touring Bike Riders but the crotch rocket kids who think they are all evil kneival or who ever. Basically kids who think they are 6' tall and bullet proof until they hit a car head on or a tree ........

Yes, driving in Las Vegas, work van, one of those tried to pass a car and clipped his rear tire on the front bumper while we're going around 75 mph. Rider didn't make it and four other vehicles involved in horrendous wreck trying to avoid the mayhem. 😕

I am Australian Police bike trained - part of the course was a trip to the morgue to see the results of high speed and untrained riders/drivers. I was also a member of a precision riding team speaializing in high speed cross overs. My days of speed and "fun" are over - now maturity and common sense takes precedence :)

That is one of the laughable criterior here - you need to take a "defensive riding course" to be eligable to get a licence. So what!!!

You do the course and ride/drive anyway you want to once you have that little bit of pointless paper - the course is meaningless other than being a money grab for the state.

In Oz, once you get a probationary licence (your inititial licence that comes with restrictions for 2 years andf applies to cars as well) you are restricted to nothing larger than a 250cc bike. The logic behind it is to let new riders get some riding experience before they move onto more powerful bikes. When that law came in, zonks ago, motor bike manufacturers just made their 250cc bike a bit more powerful. The up side is the law stopped inexperienced riders from getting their licence then jumping on an 800 lb, 1300cc bike and killing themselves within the first year like they can here in the US.

Needless to say, I was never very popular on motor bike forums :D

I couldn't handle the sexism and homophobia I encountered on motorbike forums. I stuck two out for a while but as soon as you say you're not happy about the relentless sexist, homophobic crap you're then a target for the knuckle daggers to prove how tough and edgy they think they are.

In the end I spent a fair amount of time responding to posts with a pic of a dinosaur because that's what a hardcore of them were, relics of the past, clustered together in their own self affirming pool, clinging to hateful ideas that allowed them to bash other people.

Shame because the wealth of knowledge and experience was phenomenal. When I started riding the help and advice that was offered was invaluable.
But no other women would stick around to be denigrated so there was no balance and then they'd ask me why?!!

At least half of them were decent people but as usual it's the loud minority that dominates and the good guys do their best to say nothing so on it goes.

Don't know about the forums but IRL around here there are many/most that are loud and stupid. Education isn't a high priority with most so stupid is a real thing.

Mostly stupid knows to keep quiet where I live.

It can be quite a shock when people decide to reveal their true identity so I'm all for getting it all out of the way quick, saves time 😆

I couldn't agree more with you about forum dwellers in general - the very same people that give riding a bad name.

I got tired of the BS over what bike you rode - the attitude was if you didn't ride a harley, you weren't a biker. Funny about that cos I ride a harley yet I'm NOT a biker, I'm a person who happens to ride a bike for enjoyment which means not tear arsing around at 100 miles an hour every where, or try to be tough or any other steroetype of behaviour forum dwellers try to live up to.

Anyway, I have my bike, I have been riding for years, I enjoy riding and I don't particularly care what type of bike you ride, whether your old or young, male or female, where your from, how much money you make, where you live, what you do for a living or any other irrelevant rubbish when it comes to riding - so long as you are respectful and ride safely. When I say you, I am speaking generally by the way :)

My first bike was an 18 year old Honda CB400F canary yellow.
I got lots of comments on it (this was real life, not a forum)
Mostly another bike would pull up next to me (at railway crossings, traffic lights etc), open their vizor and ask how old the bike was, and tell me he/she started out on a similar bike...
Nothing denigrating ever
