I don't know. I am finding conflicting information.
Yes, pilchards are much bigger. They are grown up sardines I think. But its a vague definition. Apparently fresh pilchards in the UK were renamed Cornish sardines to make them more appealing.
I think the shortage us because we don't use our UK pilchards to make tinned pilchards.
Well that's the thing we are discussing. The tinned variety seem in short supply in the UK.

I think the sardines in tomato sauce they have at the Asian supermarket are pilchards, they are fatter than the sardines from Costco.
