Hey, she's weird, but she ain't picky about her bread (I buy the cheapest supermarket bread I can find). But groundhogs are supposed to eat people's crops. Everyone around here that has a garden is safe, because she doesn't like anything but bananas, peanut butter sandwiches, peanuts in shells, and grass/weeds/bush fronds. Now just about everyone knows that peanuts and bananas don't grow up here in NE Ohio. So I don't know. The squirrels look at her with concern from the safety of the deck rail or nearby tree when she comes right up to the door and takes food out of my hand, thinking (if they think) "Hey, look at that spoiled chubby kid risking that the human might eat her".
Now
ZCook, you wouldn't know this story as I told it some years ago, but her name is Stewie. She got her name because my husband's mom told us of when she was very young and their family was poor, her father brought home a field dressed groundhog for them to cook. She said it was similar to bear meat--a bit fatty and a oily, but not bad. Before we knew she was a female, we started calling her Stewie because, you know, groundhog stew...
I first saw her out in the yard when she was about 1 y/o and I was feeding the squirrels peanut butter sandwiches. I threw a wedge out to her in the yard, she munched on it, and she came up on the deck looking for more. Pretty darned smart with no fear. I went out and bought cabbage, lettuce, etc. because I had read online that groundhogs like that, and she turned her nose up at it. So I tried giving her a banana and she loved it. After that she was a daily visitor and soon knew her name, as when she comes to the door and eats, I stand there and talk to her while she eats (if she can hear me over the sounds of her munching because she has horrible eating manners). Or maybe she just heard my voice saying "blah blah blah" and thinks it means food, I am not sure. At any rate, she's in her 3rd year with us and she waddles up when I call her name, so who knows. And she gets rid of the damned feral cats!
Anyway, back on topic, the amount of recalls that have been of late are ridiculous. My biggest fear are foods that are served in their purchased states and aren't subjected to heating. At least you can wash produce, but what does one do with bread that might be contaminated? Even if it were heated, the idea of rodent droppings on it is absolutely disgusting.
