According to Trump's speech today the USA are 'taking charge' with Rodriguez in place. He emphasised US control of Venezuelan oil in terms of US taking charge.
Maria Corina Machado apparently has persuaded a lot of the military (who are very discontented with the regime) to back her
He also said that there is no confidence in Machado in Venezuela.

Some random facts. As objective as I can off the top of my head.
!n 1998, the petroleum industry was producing close to 3 million barrels a day, and a large proportion of that was sold to the USA.
In 2010, that had shrunk to 1 million.
While we do have the largest reserves in the world, much of that oil is what's called "heavy" oil. The standard measure is called an API (American Petroleum Institute) gravity. To give you an idea, Saudi oil is between 27-37 API (ie. light crude); Brent (North Sea) is 38 API; Iranian 30 API; Texas 31 API; and the huge reserves in Venezuela, 4-12 API. To get the oil out of the ground, you have to use high pressure boiling water, injected to about 1km below ground. In other words, it's expensive to pump and is only worth it if the world price is above $100 a barrel.
Inflation in Venezuela has always ( at least since I've been here) been high. Inefficient governments, unfortunately, from the left, the centre and the right. Totally hopeless. However, since 2010, we've had hyperinflation. In 2018, it hit 800,000%. We've also had arbitrary price controls, expropriation (ie. nationalisation) of key industries and a general persecution of private industry. The current minimum wage and pension is worth $0,30 a month.
Over 8 million Venezuelans have fled the country, in search of better opportunities or because of political persecution. There are currently about 1,000 political prisoners.
There was a general strike in 2002, which resulted in 18,000 petroleum industry employees being sacked, without compensation. There were violent street protests in the country almost every year from 2002 onwards, usually resulting in many fatalities and protesters bombed with tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition. The National Guard and the Bolivarian police are usually the main perpetrators.
Despite all the negativity, we've got gold, nickel, diamonds, petrol, natural gas, cane sugar, coffee, chocolate, over 1,000 kms of pristine tropical beaches, tepuys (you'll have to look that up), Amazon jungle, wonderful plains, mountains (especially the Andes) and the world's highest waterfall.

One fact I found fascinating was in the UK Prime Minister's statement earlier regarding UK nationals living in Venezuela. He stated there were only approx. 500 UK nationals in Venezuela. Seems so few. You are are a rare breed karadekoolaid!

He's talking off the top of his head there. Venezuelans love Maria Corina because she's been the only one to stand up to the regime over the past 12 years. Whether she has the support of the military (essential), I don't know. She was the one who proved that Maduro stole the elections last year.

Yep, we're a rare breed and generally speaking, we've married Venezuelans and keep to ourselves! I only know 3 Brits; most of my friends are Venezuelan.

Cleatly she has no interest in being Trump's puppet and allowing American businesses free exploitation of Venezuela's natural resources. That will be why he is trash talking her.

Yeah. She has the Nobel Peace Prize. But he is not supporting her or her deputy. Rodriguez who is deputy to Maduro is to remain in post.

It depends on what news you read, I don’t get the idea that he doesn’t like Machado, but he has to make sure it’s smooth transition.
In fact, in Dec, she said something positive about Trump.
We have plenty of oil in USA here, let’s not fall into the trap we got there to get oil.

I’m always nervous of the news, last year I thought for sure Trump wouldn’t win because of all the negativity I read from the news, I was really surprised he did.

If it weren't for the USA, we wouldn't have a petrol industry. They set it up in the 1920s, built all the infrastructure, helped with technology, trained all our excellent engineers (until 2000) and ensured efficient business methods. Oh, and they also bought most of it at international prices.
Currently, we give away 500,000 barrels to Cuba and Nicaragua, and the rest is cut price to the Chinese, the Iranians and the Russians. The Chinese are also destroying the Amazon jungle hunting for gold, and milking us dry of rare earth elements, thanks to government complicity.

Indeed she did say positive things about Trump. And he did about her too. But I was watching the live speech from Trump today and he said she has no support in Venezuela and implied that was why she wasn't being 'appointed'. One could read this in several ways. This was Trump talking live not a news report.

I'm simply reporting what he said.

I half listened to his speech, so I don’t pay attention that much to what Trump says.
